Chapter 5: Twin Shadow Daggers

We stood there, pumped up and ready to take on the Reaper, but then reality hit us. We had no idea how to use our blessings. We looked at each other, feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty. "I think we need to find a sanctuary," I said, trying to sound calm. "We can't just go around fighting monsters without knowing what we're doing." Mikey nodded in agreement. "But where do we find one?" We looked around the old farmhouse, but there were no obvious clues. We were still standing in the same room where we had received our blessings. "If only they had given us some kind of map," Mikey said, throwing up his hands in frustration. As soon as he said the word "map", a holographic image of a world map appeared in front of him. We both stared at it in awe. "What the...?" I trailed off, shocked. Mikey looked at the map, a hint of familiarity in his eyes. "This is just like the game I used to play." I raised an eyebrow, curious. "Really?" Mikey nodded, studying the map intently. "Yeah. I think I can work with this." Mikey turned to me, a grin on his face. "Try it, Luke. See if it works for you too." I nodded, and as soon as I thought about the map, a holographic image of the world appeared in front of me. I stared at it in awe, feeling a sense of wonder at the technology. I tentatively reached out a hand, trying to zoom in on the map like I would on a smartphone. To my surprise, it worked. The map zoomed in, showing us a more detailed view of the surrounding area. Mikey leaned in, his eyes scanning the map. "Look, there are some green lights," he said, pointing to small green dots on the map. I counted them quickly. "There are about a hundred of them," I said. I pointed to one of the green lights on the map, and Mikey nodded. "Let's check it out," he said. I clicked on the green light, and a small text box appeared below it. "'Dubai Sanctuary'," Mikey read aloud. I grinned, feeling a sense of excitement. "I think we can safely assume that the green lights are the sanctuaries," I said. Mikey nodded, a look of relief on his face. "Yeah, that makes sense. Alright, let's plan our route. Which sanctuary do you think we should head to first?" Mikey and I studied the map, checking the distances between our current location and the various sanctuaries. As we scrolled through the list, our excitement began to fade. "None of these are within walking distance," Mikey said, frowning. I nodded, feeling a sense of disappointment. "Yeah, we're looking at some serious travel time if we want to reach any of these sanctuaries." Mikey sighed. "I guess we should have expected that. I mean, if the sanctuaries were just a stone's throw away, it wouldn't be much of a challenge, would it?" I shook my head. "No, it wouldn't. But still, it would be nice to have a sanctuary nearby. Guess we'll just have to suck it up and start traveling." I looked at the map again, and my eyes landed on the Dubai Sanctuary, which was still flashing. I noticed a small + sign below it, which I hadn't seen before. I wondered what it did, so I clicked on it. Additional details appeared below the Dubai Sanctuary label. I scanned them quickly, and my eyes widened in surprise. "Mikey, check this out," I said, turning the map to face him. Mikey leaned in, and his eyes scanned the details. "Whoa, look at that," he said. "There are over 8.5 million Sanctum Residents in Dubai Sanctuary." I nodded, feeling a sense of awe. "And get this - there are 526 Dauntless in there too." Mikey whistled. "That's a lot of people. I'm starting to feel a little envious, to be honest." I nodded in agreement. "Yeah, me too. I mean, those 526 Dauntless got to choose whether they wanted to be Dauntless or Sanctum Residents, and they're already safe in a sanctuary." Mikey frowned. "While we're stuck out here, trying to survive on our own. It's just not fair." I sighed, feeling a pang of jealousy. "Well, I guess we'll just have to work harder to catch up. We can't change the past, but we can shape our own destiny." Mikey nodded, determination in his eyes. "You're right, Luke. We'll get there. We just have to keep pushing forward." As we walked out of the farmhouse, Mikey said, "If it's like the game I played before on the computer, then this might work... Inventory." I watched as he said the word, and a grid of empty lines appeared in front of him. I tried it too, saying "Inventory" out loud. The same grid appeared in front of me, but this time, I saw that the top left corner had two black daggers icon. I clicked on the icon, and a description appeared below it. "Twin Shadow Daggers," it read. Below that, it said "Unique Weapon" and "Rank: Unknown". I looked up at Mikey, showing him the description. Mikey's eyes widened as he read the text. "Whoa, nice," he said. "I think those daggers might be related to your blessing, Luke." I nodded thoughtfully, considering the possibility. It made sense that my blessing could be connected to the daggers. But what did it mean, exactly? And how was I supposed to use them? I clicked on the "Equip" option, and to my surprise, the Twin Shadow Daggers materialized in my hands. I felt a thrill of excitement as I grasped the hilts, feeling the weight and balance of the daggers. Mikey's eyes widened as he stared at the daggers. "Whoa, those are sweet," he said. "Can I borrow one?" I handed one of the daggers to Mikey. As soon as his hand closed around the hilt, the dagger seemed to shimmer and dissolve into a dark shadow. I watched in amazement as the shadow seemed to writhe and twist, and then suddenly, the dagger reappeared in my hand. I felt a strange tingling sensation, as if the dagger was somehow bound to me. Mikey looked at me with a mixture of surprise and curiosity. "What just happened?" he asked. I thought back to the description I had seen earlier. "I think it might be connected to the 'Unique Weapon' thing," I said. "Maybe it's bonded to me or something." I looked down at the Twin Shadow Daggers, still clutched in my hands. The dark metal seemed to gleam in the fading light, and I felt a strange sense of connection to the weapons.
