Chapter 2: Questions over Answers

695 Words
I stepped out of my house, into a world that had gone mad. Cars were bumper to bumper, their drivers either unconscious or fled. Sirens blared in the distance, and people stumbled through the streets, their faces etched with confusion and fear. I jogged through the chaos, desperate for answers. "Hey, mister!" I called out to a man standing by his car, staring blankly at the wreckage. "Do you know what's happening?" He turned to me, his eyes unfocused. "I...I don't know," he stammered. "I was driving, and then...and then everything just stopped." I nodded sympathetically, but I knew I couldn't stay there. I had to keep moving. I took off in a sprint, weaving through the crowded streets until I turned into a narrow alleyway. That's where I saw Mikey, my best friend since childhood. He was slumped against the wall, his eyes wide with shock. "Mikey!" I exclaimed, rushing over to him. "What happened?" He looked up at me, his face pale. "It was Sarah," he whispered, referring to his younger sister. "She just...she just vanished. Right in front of me." I felt a pang of horror, knowing exactly what he was talking about. I grabbed his arm and pulled him to his feet. "We need to get out of here," I said, already dragging him toward the end of the alley. "Where are we going?" Mikey asked, stumbling after me. "The old farmhouse on the outskirts of town," I replied. "It's the safest place I can think of." We ran as fast as we could, not stopping until we reached the abandoned farmhouse. We burst through the door, slamming it shut behind us. For a moment, we just stood there, panting and staring at each other. Then, Mikey spoke up. "What's going on, Luke?" he asked, his voice shaking. "What's happening to everyone?" I shook my head. "I don't know," I admitted. "But I think it has something to do with...with whatever that thing was that took our families." Mikey's eyes went wide. "You think it's connected?" he asked. I nodded. "I'm sure of it." Just then, the piercing sound from earlier filled the air again. We covered our ears, wincing in pain. And then, the voice spoke. "Hear me, mortals," it declared, its tone ancient and commanding. "The Reaping has begun. The fabric of the world has been torn asunder, and the balance of the cosmos has been disrupted. The chosen ones have been taken, and the remainder shall be tested." The voice paused, its words echoing off the walls of the farmhouse. "The time of reckoning is upon you. Prepare yourselves, mortals, for the trials that lie ahead." The voice fell silent, leaving us staring at each other in shock. What did it all mean? And what lay ahead for us? Mikey and I stared at each other, our minds reeling from the ancient voice's words. What did it mean by "the Reaping"? And what kind of trials lay ahead? The voice continued, its words echoing through the air. "The Reaping is a phenomenon that occurs once every millennia," it explained. "It is a time of great upheaval, when the fabric of reality is torn apart and the balance of the cosmos is disrupted." The voice paused, its tone unwavering. "During the Reaping, ninety percent of the world's population is taken. They are preserved in infinity, frozen in time until the Reaper's fate is sealed." "If the Reaper succeeds in eliminating the remaining ten percent, the preserved souls will be returned to the mortal realm...as dust. Their existence will be erased, lost forever." The voice's words hung in the air, leaving us with more questions than answers. But it didn't seem to be addressing us directly. Instead, it seemed to be speaking to a wider audience, one that included all those who had been left behind. Mikey and I looked at each other, our eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. We knew that we had to keep moving, to find a way to survive in this new world. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched, that the Reaper was out there, waiting for us.
