The music warped into something slower, more intimate, as Kael Draven began to move through the crowd. Every step he took parted the sea of bodies like a king claiming his throne. My heart hammered so violently I was certain the entire hall could hear it.
I forced myself to breathe. Stay calm. Stay in character.
But his eyes never left me.
That crimson gaze pinned me in place with the weight of centuries. There was no escape, no melting back into the crowd. He had marked me.
A tall figure in a silver-embroidered coat stepped into my path, trying to engage me in conversation, but I barely registered his words. My focus remained locked on the approaching predator.
“Miss Voss,” a deep, velvet voice said from behind me, smooth as aged wine and twice as intoxicating.
I turned slowly, lifting my chin to meet his stare directly. Up close, Kael Draven was even more overwhelming. The sharp lines of his face, the subtle scent of sandalwood and blood, the raw power radiating from him like heat from a forge. He was beautiful in the way ancient ruins are beautiful ,majestic, dangerous, and built on the bones of the fallen.
“Lord Draven,” I replied, keeping my voice steady. “An honor.”
His lips curved into that same predatory smile. “The honor is mine.” He extended a gloved hand. “Dance with me.”
It wasn’t a request.
My mind screamed to refuse, to create distance, to find a way to strike later when he was vulnerable. But every eye in the hall was on us. Refusing the master of the Academy would draw more attention than I could afford.
I placed my hand in his.
The moment our skin touched, even through the thin barrier of his glove, a spark of energy jolted through me. The blood bond ,not yet formed, but already stirring ,reacted violently. Heat flooded my veins. For a brief second, I felt his hunger, ancient and ravenous, brushing against my mind.
He led me onto the dance floor with effortless grace. One hand settled possessively at the small of my back, pulling me closer than propriety allowed. The other held mine with surprising gentleness that somehow felt more threatening than force.
“You’re trembling,” he murmured, his breath warm against my ear as we began to move.
“New environment,” I lied. “It’s… overwhelming.”
Kael’s low chuckle vibrated through his chest. “You lie beautifully, little Thorne.”
My steps faltered for half a second. He tightened his grip, keeping me steady against him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I whispered, even as my pulse thundered.
His fingers pressed firmer into my back, drawing me flush against his hard body. “You carry their scent. Their fire. Their defiance.” His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. “I conquered your kingdom, Mirael. I watched your ancestors bleed. And yet here you are, bold enough to walk into my domain with murder in your eyes and star-iron strapped to your thigh.”
Ice flooded my veins.
He knew everything.
I tried to pull away, but his hold was iron. Around us, the other dancers continued as if nothing was happening, oblivious or too afraid to intervene.
Kael leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. “Relax. If I wanted you dead, you would already be ash. Instead, I find myself… intrigued.”
The song shifted into something darker, more sensual. His body moved against mine with centuries of practiced dominance. Every brush of his thigh, every subtle shift of his hand sent unwanted sparks of heat through me. I hated how my body responded. I hated the way my breath hitched when his fangs grazed ever so lightly against the sensitive skin just below my ear.
“What do you want?” I breathed.
“One year.” His voice was velvet over steel. “One year as my consort. Share my bed. Share my power. Share my blood. In return, I will break the Thorne curse that has haunted your bloodline for centuries.”
I nearly laughed in disbelief. “You expect me to believe you would help me?”
“I expect you to be smart enough to accept.” His crimson eyes bored into mine. “Refuse, and I expose you tonight. Your death would be slow. Educational. Or…” His thumb traced a slow circle on my lower back. “Accept, and you get everything you came here for ,plus the one thing your family has never had. A chance to live without watching everyone you love die.”
The music swelled around us. My mind raced. This was not the plan. This was a trap wrapped in temptation.
“Why?” I demanded softly. “Why offer this to the woman who came to kill you?”
Kael’s smile turned almost gentle, which terrified me more than any threat. “Because in eight hundred years, no one has ever looked at me the way you do. With hate so pure it burns. And because I am tired of eternity being… hollow.”
He pulled me even closer, until there was no space left between our bodies. I could feel the hard planes of his chest, the strength in his arms, the unmistakable evidence of his arousal pressing against me.
The blood bond flared again, stronger this time. Flashes of his memories , loneliness, conquest, endless nights ,brushed against my consciousness.
“Choose wisely, Mirael Thorne,” he whispered against my lips, so close I could taste his breath. “The clock is already ticking.”
The song ended.
Kael did not release me immediately. He held me there on the dance floor as the crowd began to applaud, his eyes promising dark pleasures and darker consequences.
One year.
One year as the consort of the monster who destroyed my world.
One year to find a way to kill him… or lose myself completely in the fire he ignited.
I met his gaze with every ounce of defiance I still possessed.
“I accept.”
Kael Draven’s smile was victorious, sensual, and utterly possessive.
“Wise choice, my little consort.”
As he led me off the dance floor toward the private balconies overlooking the eternal night, I felt the weight of my decision settle over me like chains made of velvet and blood.
The game had truly begun.
And I was no longer sure who was the hunter…
…and who was the prey.
