Although it seemed like they were not on the same page, Elvia knew that her mum meant well for her. “why?” She asked why sobbing. “Why did you leave me mum? I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with you because you were barely here with me.”
Maggie sat on her daughter’s bed, “I know that you are saddened by the fact that I haven’t always been with you, and yes, I understand your anger towards me and don’t think I should give excuses, but my child, it was for you and me to survive. You would sleep and wake up without me around to give you forehead kisses, but I want you to know that I always love you, and I promise to make up for lost times” Maggie sobbed quietly while saying all these to her daughter.
Elvia had always relied on Clinton and she was starting to feel like she was too stupid to have done that instead of being independent even if they were friends or lovers. She suddenly cringed. The word ‘lovers’ left a bad taste in her mouth.
She looked at her mom, the woman who had made sure she never lacked even if she was barely there physically. She never owed and cleared up all bills because of her mom. She also never had to work and now that she thought about it and looked into her mum’s dark hazel eyes, she knew she was wrong to hold a grudge against her mom.
“I am sorry for judging you mom. And even if not being there for me physically can be painful, you are alive, and I have seen some people who don’t have mums. You have always provided for me and I never saw reason to work because I didn’t lack. Thank you mum” Elvia cried as she realized her mistake and wrong judgement all these years as her mom was singlehandedly taking care of her, even up until now.
Maggie was very surprised as well as relieved that her daughter was no longer at odds with her. “I love you little Elvie, and I want you to know that I am not just your mother, but your confidant, best friend, and talk buddy. You can tell me about your success, your failure, and what makes you cry right now. It is totally fine if you don’t want to tell me now, I will wait patiently till you are ready.”
“No mum, I will tell you.” Elvia said.
“Ok honey, I am listening. Pour your heart out” Maggie tried to comfort her daughter.
She decided to tell her mom what transpired between her and Clinton at the restaurant.
“what? Why would Clinton even do that?” Maggie was speechless because she genuinely never thought that the Clinton that always used to hang out with her precious daughter, had shattered her like this.
“Who does that mum? She asked baffled, but she quit crying, as for some reason, clearing the air with her mum made her feel much better.
“As much as I want to call Clinton all sorts of names for letting down my daughter, I would only say that for a person who wakes up and loses interest in his girlfriend, Clinton doesn’t deserve you. Frankly, I would tell you to be your own boss my child, as that is way better. The way your boyfriend broke up with you, shows that he never loved you my dear. True love doesn’t fade. And relationships are not just evolving around love, because there has to be other attributes that can make it work.” Maggie said.
“it feels like you are speaking out of experience mum. Did you go through all this with dad?” Elvia couldn’t help but ask her mum.
Her thoughts were confirmed when her mum smiled bitterly, “I went through worse child. I didn’t tell you because you were too young to be burdened by that, and now I can say it. I said I went through worse because I got married to your dad. And that’s worse, because we can’t break up.
Elvia remembered that her dad left them when she was eight, for some reason.
“let’s talk about that later honey. Are you ok now? I know it’s hard, but pull yourself together.”
“I am alright mum. Thanks. I know I have never said this before, but I love you” Elvia said.
“And I love you too my child. And you should never forget that I am always here for you and you shouldn’t bottle up your feelings when it comes to sharing them with me.” Maggie sobbed harder as she didn’t expect her daughter to say that this soon.
“Ok, enough of the tears baby. Freshen up, I baked apple pies for us. Come ok? I will be waiting downstairs.
“Ok mum. I will be right out” Maggie smiled at her daughter’s response, and went ahead.
As Elvia had her bath, she realized that her mum was right. If Clinton really loved her, he wouldn’t spout the nonsense he did in the restaurant. She was grateful to finally have her mum by her side, as it was what she just realized she missed out on. A relationship with her mum. It felt so much like she had a trustable best friend and confidant.
She regretted not understanding her mum and realizing her mum’s feelings were hurt.
Speaking of feelings, she remembered the stranger earlier on, and remembered her mum’s word ‘Be your own boss’. She smirked.
“well, this is gonna be fun.”
