Damon started before Elvia could say a word, “Aunt”
“Let her speak for herself Damon!” Gregory cut him off.
Elvia felt like her butt was being burnt by the chair and all she wanted to do at that moment was to get out of the suffocating room.
And just then,
“Good Evening Everyone”
Everyone’s attention darted towards the dining’s entrance. An old lady was being pushed in a wheelchair by a woman in her thirties.
The old lady looked pretty despite the wrinkles, with dark hair that was tied up and thick brows that looked like that of Damon’s still coupled with long lashes. you could say that she was quite the beauty when she was younger.
She looked like Damon’s female version. She could tell at first glance that she was his grandma.
“Mom” Gregory greeted his mom as she stood up and joined the table to Elvia’s surprise.
The woman waved off greetings as she beckoned them to continue what they were doing.
“Damon! You are here?” the old lady asked and she sounded surprised that Damon joined them today. “and the damsel beside you?”
“Good evening grandma”
“This is Elvia Morrison grandma. The woman I was speaking of. She is my girlfriend.” Damon introduced and Elvia couldn’t stop her hearts sudden skip at that introduction.
“It’s a pleasure meeting you” Elvia said while smiling and surprised she didn’t stutter.
“I am equally very glad to have you at this dinner gathering dear. I sure do hope you are enjoying your time here. Is everyone treating you warmly? The lady asked which made Elvia stunned. What did she mean by warmly? That means…
“Of course mom” Gregory hastily answered before she could utter a word.
“Please feel comfortable dear” the lady said while smiling warmly at her.
Elvia felt like the tension she felt since she stepped into this room was replaced by a slightly warm atmosphere because of this kind old lady. She felt quite surprised as this wasn’t the kind of grandmother she had envisioned in her mind.
Now she was wary of Damon’s dad and aunty. They seemed to measure someone’s worth by their background and she hated such. The old lady surprisingly didn’t make any other enquiries after the introduction.
They all ate quietly, and she presumed this was the way things were done with the wealthy. They wouldn’t talk until they finished with their food. Well, that was also good as it showed respect for food.
When they were done Aunt Ann led them to the living room. Damon gave her a hand and led her to his grandmother for a more formal greeting.
She smiled at the old lady and imitated what Damon’s mom did earlier. She gave her feathery pecks on her cheeks as a formal greeting.
“I hope you are well grandma” she said. “I am very well dear, a good thing Damon finally found the perfect taste in a girl. “Simple, yet graceful and classy.
Elvia smiled shyly, as she had felt out of place initially, considering the designer products they were all wearing. She was happy to get such compliment from the lady. Just like back in the restaurant….
“Told you so” her train of thoughts were interrupted by Damon. She looked up and found him smiling. She felt her heart skip a beat. How could he smile like that?
He looked like a model for a toothpaste brand with those perfect teeth that could make any woman surrender to his charm, and she found herself being among them at that moment.
“Thank you grandma” she said and they all walked towards the direction of the living room.
She was glad, atleast she had one less person to deal with. Damon’s aunt and dad, she could already envision future wars.
She sighed heavily, and Damon squeezed her palm as reassurance. She was glad he did, looked towards him and mouthed an inaudible thank you.
She saw him raise one side of his lips in a slight smile.
She could literally feel the trace of their wealth in every place her eyes landed on. She could only imagine the prices of these expensive furniture she was seeing. Even if she worked twenty four seven her entire life, she knew that affording all these were just a fantasy.
“Elvia dear” Aunt Ann called her attention.
“Yes?”
“Can you play the piano for us?”
