The Alpha's Offer

Nora stared at Kieran's outstretched hand. She didn't move. The forest, however, did. Branches snapped somewhere beyond the fog. The sound came from several directions at once, each crack followed by the soft thud of something heavy landing on the forest floor. They were getting closer. Kieran kept his hand where it was. "We're running out of time." "You expect me to trust you?" Nora asked, tightening her grip on the acoustic hailing device. "I expect you to survive." "They're not the same thing." A faint smile flickered across his face. "No. They rarely are." Another howl echoed through the mountains, much closer than before. Nora's pulse quickened. "Who are they?" "The ones who heard your voice." "My voice?" "You called to every pack on this mountain tonight. They just haven't realized how yet." She shook her head. "You're talking like this was destiny." "I'm talking like it's a problem." He lowered his hand. "You don't have to believe me. But if we're still standing here in thirty seconds, you won't have a choice." As if to prove his point, a deep growl rolled through the trees. It wasn't behind them anymore. It was beside them. Nora slowly turned. Two pairs of glowing eyes watched from the fog. Then four. Then eight. They floated in the darkness before the shapes behind them began to emerge. Massive wolves. Larger than the one that had attacked her cabin. Their coats ranged from ash gray to jet black, their eyes reflecting silver under the moonlight. Unlike the first beast, these wolves didn't look wild. They looked disciplined. Hunters. One stepped forward. Its nose lifted into the air as it inhaled deeply. "It is her," a rough voice said. The wolf's body shifted. Bones cracked. Fur withdrew beneath skin. Within seconds, a broad-shouldered man stood where the wolf had been. Long silver hair fell over his shoulders, and a jagged scar crossed one side of his face. His cold blue eyes settled on Nora. "So the rumors were true." Kieran moved until he stood between them. "You've crossed into my territory." The silver-haired man smiled. "And?" "You know the consequences." "I know she's worth them." Nora looked from one man to the other. "Would someone please explain what the hell is happening?" Neither answered. The stranger kept his attention on Kieran. "Our Alpha requests the girl." "She's not yours to request." "Then surrender her." "No." The single word landed with enough force to silence the forest. The wolves behind the stranger lowered their bodies instinctively. Even Nora felt the weight behind Kieran's voice. The silver-haired man's smile disappeared. "You'd start a war over one human?" Kieran's answer came without hesitation. "I'd end one." For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then the stranger laughed. "You're already too late." He looked directly at Nora. "They're coming." "Who?" "The Elders." His expression turned grim. "When they discover what your voice can do..." He paused. "...they won't ask you to join them." A cold knot tightened in Nora's stomach. "What can my voice do?" The stranger looked at Kieran. "You haven't told her?" "I've had other priorities." "Then allow me." His blue eyes locked onto Nora's. "Your voice doesn't calm wolves." He smiled. "It commands them." Silence fell. Nora almost laughed. Almost. "I'm an audio engineer." "No," the man replied quietly. "You're something far rarer." The ground suddenly shook beneath their feet. Not a tremor. An impact. Then another. Boom. Boom. Boom. Every wolf in the clearing stiffened. Kieran's eyes narrowed toward the mountain ridge. "They're here." The silver-haired man's confidence vanished. "No..." A third impact thundered through the valley. Trees bent as a powerful gust of wind swept through the forest. Then a voice echoed across the mountains. Deep. Ancient. Impossible to locate. "Bring... her... to... me." Every wolf dropped to one knee. Except Kieran. And Nora. She had no idea why she was still standing. But every instinct told her the night was only beginning.
