CHAPTER THREE: WYONNE'S ARRIVAL

987 Words
'What the f**k is she doing here'. Ron stood thoroughly dazed as though paralyzed. Even his aching ribs subsided a bit. Stealing short fruitful gazes at the emerging figure, his mouth shot upward...in bewilderment. His thoughts were in shambles and yet collected. 'Is this the special someone she left me for'. Figures. Short of words, he pictured Jerry's countenance and then that of Mami. They were fully grinning...happy. '... these cynical smiles again...', he thought. For no apparent reason, the emerging figure grinned too. Head high and maintaining an erect posture Wyonne navigated all the oddly but gaily placed furniture. Twice the hem of her blouse had got stucked to various adjacent protrusions located on the wall She walked like her old self back at school; without an inkling of guilt. More like the school's debate group rehearsing their verses. 'Dazzling...but still.' As if reading his thoughts, Wyonne stopped, fidgeting. Poising laterally some five feets away from Ron, her fingers pulling the frills of her blouse, she bowed. "Hi Ronsboy. I heard from your mum you were I'll... actually wounded so I decided to check on you. Not a bad idea I think." A quizzical expression played on Ron's face. 'Humorous...must she be so comical.' Then on impulse, he said: "It's not necessary. You know we're the opposite sides of a coin; we just can't meet". Jerry who have been reclining softly some time ago cut in momentarily." Says who". "Ron", Ron said indignantly. A more deafening silence ensued. Suddenly, Wyonne stared at the door and walked out. Next came Mami's plaintive voice screeching from the adjoining room. Some time ago she had entered the kitchen for lunch. "... Wyonne wait, please !" Tighting her wrinkled face she yelled at Ron. "I hope you've seen what you've done...we could have been able to atleast siphon some money from her father; since he's the district magistrate..." The other part of her yells went into his ears in scattered piece. He now understood what Mami did. Ever since he told her of Wyonne's affection towards him, she seemed to seek for every opportunity to to knot him... against his will. Damn. 'Should I just...' But then a slap intercepted his cheek. "Argh !" He reeled in agony. "Mum !" Similar efforts were felt by virtually all his body parts. Holding his rib in pretense, he leaned on a chair. Also his deception was detected and more pummeling followed. He had to think fast of a way out. "Mum, what I told you about those zombies are absolutely true...I can prove them". That worked. Mami paused hesitating. "Tell me about it. All of it". Unsettled still, he led the way and ended at a dead end which served as their parlour. Kowtowing in mock humour, he traced his podgy fingers to the only settee available. "Sit", he echoed. They both obeyed with different thoughts running through their mind. Ron set a stool slightly adjacent, clearing his throat for a start. He needed his memory at its very best. 'Very well'. Simultaneously, Jerry's face was already passing on for a weakened smile. He needn't ask him the reason. He started. "What I will say is er... something extremely paramount. Mum, if my memory is still sharp, I recall informing you of the world's last apocalypse and you had doubted me. However we haven't been victims doesn't mean they do not exist. Quick as a snake, he reached out for his handkerchief and wiped the drops of sweat that were beginning to form. "As I were saying, these odd beings are are out there nibbing us gradually all in the name of technology..." "Brother, I do not see how your zombie-based discussion degenerated into with a huge chunk of it rallied on technology. I mean there is no connection whatsoever", Jerry interrupted opening his buccal to the fullest. "Jerry, there are connections. I've got valid reasons backing me up and verily, everything I speak stands on clear grounds." Ron said amidst peeping at the old woman for any change in countenance. 'Must they rubbish my every effort?' Ron pondered. As for Mami, she got completely absorbed in the folktale occasionally chipping in insignificant remarks. "Mum!" "What!", She flared. With both palms crossing the other, He continued."A week ago, we all heard news of a viral outbreak in Gallantry Range. Allegedly thousands of people died and a lot of them are still dying... feeling secured. More or less adding to a larger battalion against their freewill to fight as living dead. Do you still insist on feeling safe?" He said, softening his tone towards the end of the dialogue. "Thereafter, these beings would be sent after the entirety of the 'remaining' human race." Immediately Ron ended, both Mami and Jerry yelped to have their say on the subject. Luckily, Mami protested on his side. "We will go." "No we wouldn't." "Let's see who's the head here." "I've said mine; I'm not going anywhere." "My declaration remains top with yours and every other person's subordinate." "How?When?" Jerry submitted. "Tomorrow", his mum said hastily. "Except it be too early". "Not too early", Ron countered with a smile so wide his lips touched his eyes on either sides. "Immediately after lunch you'll all get all your clothings and similarly essential things". "Ok mum", Jerry said innocently gobbling down on his favourite chocolate. Finding at least no point in prolonging the matter. "Ron I think for this to work you'll have to do something for me in return. How about a bargain?" "Fuck... I should have known!" "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", Jerry said while portraying a business-like face. "How about we go to Wyonne's house before setting on our journey to only God knows where." "Fine... Happy now?" "Yeah!"Jerry said almost screaming with happiness. "Now I think I've got some stuff to show the both of you before we leave and I bet you it's damn horrific..."
