Chapter 2

When I opened my eyes again, sunlight filled the room. The other side of the bed was empty. Damian was gone. My whole body felt as though it had been torn apart. Dizzy and heavy-headed, I struggled out of bed. As I reached the door, I heard voices outside. The subordinate from the night before was speaking to Damian. Damian called him Ryan. Hearing that name made something tighten in my chest. My fiancé was named Ryan too. Disgusting. I swallowed my discomfort and kept listening. The subordinate said, "Mr. Hayes, I'd like to ask you for something. I have a fiancée back home. She should be coming to Bayhaven to visit in the next few days. Once everything is settled, I want to give her a grand wedding." Damian laughed softly. "After risking your life and doing me such a huge favor, that's all you want? "I thought you were going to ask to marry my sister." Ryan answered with complete seriousness, "There's nothing between us. My fiancée is the only woman in my heart. She's the only one I'll marry." He sounded devoted enough. Listening to him made me think of my Ryan. We had grown up together. Back when we still spent our days racing through the fields, he used to say he would marry me and give me a good life. Our parents had dismissed it as childish nonsense. When Ryan turned 16, he left for Bayhaven with only a bag on his back. "I have to make something of myself. I won't let Maya spend her life struggling." We hadn't seen each other once for 7 years. Those 7 years had changed me. I had grown out of the scrawny, awkward country girl I used to be. Even the seniors back home said I looked like a different person. Ryan, on the other hand, had never seemed to change. He sent a letter home every month. He said he worked as an aide to some big shot and had a bright future ahead of him. Every letter ended with the same reminder: don't accept another man's confession. I was only allowed to marry him. Everyone back home envied me. They said Ryan had made a success of himself without ever forgetting the girl he loved. This time, I had come to Bayhaven to marry him. But now... how could there be a wedding? The thought brought tears to my eyes. I hated this Ryan with every fiber of my being. Damian opened the door and froze when he found me sitting on the edge of the bed, crying. "Did I hurt you last night?" I shook my head. In truth, he hadn't. He had kept himself under control and been gentle the entire time. "Are you upset?" He walked over, sat beside me, and patted my back. "This was my fault. You can blame me." That only made me cry harder. I grabbed his shirt sleeve and smeared it with tears and snot. By the time I finished crying, I realized his shirt had probably cost a fortune and I had ruined it. "I'm sorry," I mumbled through my stuffed nose. "It's fine." There wasn't a trace of disgust on his face. He pulled out several tissues and wiped my cheeks. "I know the first time is always special. You were my first too. I'll give you everything I can." He poured a glass of water and handed it to me. "If you're feeling down, I can have someone take a walk with you." I nodded. The person he sent was Ryan. The sight of him made my blood boil. I grabbed a throw pillow and hurled it at him. He didn't dodge. He simply stood there and let it hit him. "You're Mr. Hayes's woman now. You'll live in comfort from here on out. You should be thanking me." "Thank you, my ass!" I wanted to stuff the pillow down his throat. He looked utterly unconcerned. "Quit while you're ahead. After everything that's happened, are you still thinking about that fiancé of yours?" He wasn't wrong. My relationship with Ryan was over. But I couldn't swallow my anger. I deliberately hit him where it hurt. "You tore my fiancé and me apart. One day, your fiancée will run away and dump you too." His expression changed at once. He grabbed my collar, fury blazing in his eyes. "Shut up! Say that again. I dare you." The collar tightened around my throat until I couldn't breathe. My face burned red. I refused to back down and glared at him. He stared into my eyes for 2 seconds. Then his face suddenly paled, as if something had struck him, and he released me.
