Jenna and I walk through town arm in arm, our heels clicking on the pavement. You would think we were 15 again, walking down the street to the diner so we could wait for Jen’s parents to pick us up. I love my little town. It’s a shame I will have to leave it.
I open the door to the diner, and I hold my arm out for Jenna to walk through first. She curtsies toward me before entering. I can’t help but snort at her comedic self. I will miss my best friend most of all.
Jenna and I sit in the back in our usual booth. The waitress Danny, takes our drink orders then hurries off to the kitchen to put our order in. Jenna and I come in here so often that the human workers have already guessed that we are werewolves. Some of the humans in this town know about us and leave us alone, but some of them don’t know about us and have banded together as hunters to hunt us down. They don’t catch us like they want to because we are faster than they are, but a few werewolves from our sister packs have been killed by them. That’s why my Pack is the only one close to the human town. We are a good provider for them because we run some of their high-end businesses and most of the humans have werewolf Mates, so that may be a big part of it. The other packs hate humans and want nothing to do with them, so they are farther away from us.
Danny returns with our drinks then disappears in the kitchen again. That’s weird. Danny always likes to talk with us about what it’s like to be a werewolf because she wants to be Mated to a werewolf someday. Why is she afraid of us now?
“So, I talked with our teachers at school as well as Principal Barney. They all agreed to let you graduate early since you will be Luna at a different pack in all,” Jenna points out, taking a sip of her Dr. Pepper.
I bite my lip. I forgot about school. I only had three months left, I doubt Jack would’ve waited that long to bring me to my new home.
“Um… Thank you Jen,” I muttered, holding my milkshake with two hands. I put my lips on the straw and I take a long sip, the chocolate pooling into my mouth. Yum. Another thing that I will miss when I leave.
Jen chuckles at my O face that I just gave my milkshake.
“You’re Mate should be jealous by how you just climaxed with that milkshake,” she joked, sucking in her bottom lip as if to stop her from laughing, but her snickers were still coming out her nose.
I roll my eyes at her. I stare at the melting whipped cream, and I eventually give in to defeat. I push the delicious milkshake to the side. I place my elbow on the table and I rest my chin in my hand with a huff.
“What would you do without me A? I am basically like your sister,” Jenna stated, flipping her hair over her shoulder for dramatic effect.
“I don’t know. I’d probably still be the shy young girl hiding in my brother’s shadows, too afraid to leave the house,” I shrugged, leaning back against the seat.
Jenna smirks at me.
“That might be true but remember girl. I was friends with you before those skinny dorks became hot Adonis Gods,” she exhaled ‘Gods’ and started fanning herself with her hand. I raise my eyebrows in shock, and I fake throw up at the mental image. That is not what I wanted to see right before we are about to eat.
“That’s one point for me,” she giggled, wiggling her eyebrows.
I scowl at her in response.
Danny comes back and places our food in front of us. She stays for a minute and opens her mouth to speak, but she turns around and shuffles back into the kitchen.
I furrow my brow in confusion. What has gotten her so on edge? I stare down at my turkey sandwich and my appetite disappears.
Jenna gasped, her fork smacking against the plate which makes a loud noise that causes me to jump.
“What’s wrong Jen?” I asked, while placing my hand to my chest to try and calm my heartbeat.
“Brian just linked me. There was another attack. Megan is down just like you were, and Judy was scratched up,” she gulped.
“Let’s go see them,” I jumped up, tossed cash on the table then Jen and I hurried out of the diner. I need to know if they are okay, and I need to ask Jack how that wolf escaped.
. . . . . .
Jack POV
I left Ayla’s hospital room and I couldn’t stand the longing from being separated from her. My wolf was whining in the back of my head. He almost marked her right there, but thankfully Jenna stepped in when she did. I need to take things slow especially since Ayla's dad is basically mad at me for being mated to his only daughter.
Jack! Come to the border quick.
I hold my head in my hands and groan. That was Julie in my head and she sounded frantic. How was she able to mind link me?
Jack! More rogues with red eyes. Judy is hurt.
That got my attention. When the pain and heaviness left my head I bolted out of the hospital, and I ran into the woods, shifting into my wolf on the way. I’m worried about my sisters constantly especially now since they plan on staying here with their mates. They chose to be on patrol to get the feel of the pack, but now I’m thinking that was a big mistake.
I arrive at the border only to see Judy sitting on the ground while holding her bleeding arm and there was an unconscious woman off to the side with a gaping wound out of her neck. There was on other guy kneeling over the unconscious girl looking like he was about to cry and Julie was pacing back and forth.
My wolf was on edge and wouldn’t let me shift back. Typical Mika. His anger is getting harder to control especially when our sisters are in trouble.
“Jack! There was an attack like the one a couple days ago. A red eyed wolf went rabid. Megan got bit,” Julie cried when she saw me. She was the only one standing and she looked unharmed. The other wolf who was kneeling over Megan looked beat up, but no scratches were on him.
I shift back to my human self, and I reach around in a nearby tree to see if there are extra clothes. There are thankfully.
I put on the shorts, and I kneel to examine Judy’s arm. My mind can’t wrap around the fact that the red eyed wolf attack is becoming more common than it should be. Judy's arm is scratched deep and if she weren't holding a t-shirt to the wound then it would be gushing blood right now. She hissed when I touched it and tried leaning away from me.
“Jack. This attack seemed like it was planned, but also not planned at the same time. He wanted nothing to do with Mark and went straight for Megan and Judy. It’s like we are dealing with something a whole lot bigger than we are prepared for,” Julie explained.
I stand up and I pinch the bridge of my nose.
“What happened!?”
We all turn around to see Brian and Eric running up to us. I am kind of glad Brad and Kyle aren’t here. We don’t need any more overprotective wolves, especially since Judy is injured.
Mark stands up and tells him everything about the attack. Brian starts pacing back and forth all while communicating with someone via mind link since his eyes keep changing. Eric looks over Megan with worry and speaks low with Mark. I don’t bother with listening in because it’s none of my business, but I heard that Mark and Megan are mates, so I know how he is feeling right now.
“Where is the wolf now?” Eric said after Mark picks up Megan bridal style. Her head lolls into his chest and he carries her away.
Julie steps forward. “I killed him. He shifted back over there,” she pointed behind us and we all turn to look. There was a young man probably 18 years old all mangled on the ground staring back at us with gray lifeless eyes.
Judy hissed, breaking the silence.
“Damn it. The wolf scratched me pretty bad, but he didn’t bite me, so no need to freak out, but it hurts like a b***h” she griped. She pushes the t-shirt harder on the wound and grunts through clenched teeth.
I roll my eyes. Typical Judy always trying to throw everyone off her. If Julie hadn’t of called me then Judy would have hidden her injury.
“Brian, can you help take my sister to the pack hospital?” I asked, snapping my fingers to get Brian’s attention because he was still pacing.
He shook his head and stared at me in confusion. I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms. I had the pleasure of training Brian and he was really slow, so I don't know how he is going to make it as Alpha. He blinked his eyes and ran to Judy, helping her to stand up. She rolls her eyes and I just shake my head in concern. They disappear out of sight, and I relax my shoulders.
“Julie. Can you tell me anything from any books you’ve read about what we may be up against?”
I turned to Julie who was staring out at the woods. She must have zoned out again. I lean over and snap my fingers in front of her face. She blinked and shook her head.
“I don’t know. There might be something, but I’ll have to call my contact in Europe to find out if it really is what I think it is,” Julie muttered. Her contact in Europe is a Lycan. They were the first creatures the Moon Goddess created before us werewolves. The Lycan’s prefer to stay in Europe because they are all one pack ruled by one king. They don’t like us werewolves at all, but they make an exception for Julie because she loves history and visited them to learn their history for school. I also think it's because she dated the prince, but I don’t want to think of my sister dating a Lycan right now.
Eric came up to me and he looked exhausted, like he hasn’t gotten any sleep in the past couple of days.
“I don’t know what’s going on. The rogue is just a kid,” he sighed. He sags his shoulders and rubs the back of his neck.
Julie is chewing on her fingernails and her eyes keep changing back and forth to her wolf.
“We have an idea of what we may be up against sir, but we need a couple hours to be sure,” I reassure him. I don’t know myself, but it should give Julie enough time to do her research. I wish I knew something more, but that’s why I am going back to that wolf I captured, and I will do whatever means necessary to get him to shift back. With this whole red eyed wolf thing, I am not so sure the wolf is the same one who murdered my parents, so I need some type of answers that I know this wolf will provide.
“Take all the time you need. I will have to address the pack and let them know what’s going on though, so get back to me as soon as you know. I don’t have enough warriors to add on patrol, so the sooner you can send help, that would be great,” Eric sighs.
I nod my head in agreement and we all turn around. Eric heads off to the packhouse while Julie and I head over to the pack hospital to check on Judy.
