Jack’s POV
I wake up at six in the morning after only getting four hours of sleep. I decided that I needed to go for a run to clear my mind.
I change into basketball shorts and a gray t-shirt then I shoved my feet into some running shoes. I walk into the kitchen of the guest house that Beta David suggested we stay in, and I grabbed a banana out of the bowl on the counter. David didn’t want to alarm anyone if we stayed in the Packhouse guest rooms, so we agreed on the house at the border. I didn’t care at first, but after attending that fool Huxley’s party last night, I meet my Mate who is a tiny, gorgeous thing and my wolf is whimpering from being so far away from her.
I finish eating the banana and I toss it in the trash on my way out the back door.
I start with a sprint deep into the woods. I always push myself harder when I run or even train because I don’t want anyone thinking I am weak. I still think about what I did to my father’s best friend after they were brutally murdered in front of me and my sisters. They were terrified and ran out of the room, but I was so angry that it caused my wolf to break out early which granted me the Alpha position at only ten years old. I made everyone keep me having my wolf so young a secret because I didn’t want the attention of other Packs trying to fight me or take over for me until I was of age. My mothers brother stepped in though and helped me until I turned 16 so I owe him some gratitude. It's been 13 years since that night and I still can't control my wolf's anger even with my sisters helping with pack duties.
I make it to the edge of town, and I sigh at the busying werewolves doing their run of the mill shopping. None of them have a clue as to why I am here.
David comes to my pack asking for an alliance because of a few rogue attacks, but what my main concern is, why wouldn’t the Alpha ask me himself? Instead, he sends his Beta to do it. That is why I agreed to come here and talk with the Alpha alone so I can get the full story. My sisters insisted they come with me because they wanted to try and search for their Mate, so I had my best friend Mike and Beta watch the Pack while we were gone. Judy was so excited last night when my Mate’s brother turned out to be her Mate, but Julie would not stop whining all night because she didn’t feel the bond like Judy did. It took her awhile to fall asleep after I tried explaining that her and Judy don’t share a Mate.
I turn on my heel and I sprint back to the guest house.
When I enter the house, Judy is awake, and she is making breakfast. Judy has always liked baking and cooking. She is always in the kitchens with the Omegas helping them cook for the people staying in the packhouse. She had her blonde hair tied up high on her head and I could have sworn I saw a bit of makeup on her eyes. She never wears makeup. Julie is the one always obsessing over her appearance and applying way too much makeup while Judy always focused on warrior training.
“Good morning brother,” she chirped, but she didn’t even look up as she sets me a plate on the bar top and her smile nearly reaches her ears. I roll my eyes and I respond to her smile with a smirk. Meeting her Mate really has done a number on her, hell it made me feel giddy too, but then I remind myself that I have important business to handle first.
“You’re happy today.”
I sit down and I dig into the eggs, the bacon, the sausage then I finish the pancakes last. Judy just stared at how fast I ate with a scowl.
“Yes, I’m happy. I get to see my Mate today,” she replied, ignoring my messy face. I stifle a snort because she knows if she asks me about how I scarf down my food instead of savoring it then she won’t get a straight answer.
“That’s good. Julie will be happy to finally meet her Mate too.”
I stand up and I take my plate to the sink.
“Yeah, that’s if she ever gets out of bed,” Judy scoffed. She begins packing up the food for Julie then she makes herself a plate and sits down where I was sitting.
“Why isn’t she awake yet? We have that meeting with Eric in 30 minutes,” I scowled while glancing at my watch then at Julies closed bedroom door.
“She never went to sleep. She was crying all night,” Judy sighed. She scrapped her fork on the plate trying to scoop eggs on it then took a bite.
“I’m gonna go get changed then I’ll talk to her.”
Judy waves her hand at me then takes out her phone, completely enthralled by it. I shake my head and I go to my room that is down the hall. I open my duffel bag and I change into jeans and a black t-shirt. I throw on a black and gray checkered flannel shirt and put on my converse. I leave the flannel unbuttoned because it’s a casual look. If I wanted to look formal then I would button it, but this meeting is just to discuss the rogue situation, so I don’t need to be fancy.
I walk back down the hall and I stop at Julie’s door. I use my wolf hearing to hear little sniffles coming from inside. I gently r**e my knuckles on the door then I slowly turn the knob and I open the door a c***k.
Julie is hiding under the covers.
“Come on Jules, you gotta get dressed,” I sighed. I walked over and I sat on the edge of the bed. She whined and tried to turn the other way, but since I was sitting on the blanket, it got pulled off her head. I bite my lip to hide how funny her hair looked. Her blonde hair was sticking out straight all over and it was funny.
I like my sisters and it helps to be a little bit different from them because they have blond hair and blue eyes while I have black hair and green eyes. Judy and Julie resemble our mom in so many ways, round face and small lips and the hair but the blue eyes are from my dad. I get my mom’s green eyes, my dad’s pointed jawline and thin lips and hair.
Julie groaned when she couldn’t pull the blanket out from under me, so she just throws her arm over her face.
“If you don’t get up and come with me and Judy to the packhouse then you won’t be able to meet your Mate,” I explained.
It only took five seconds, but she finally removed her arm and pouted at me like she used to do when we were five and mom wouldn’t let her have a cookie before bed. I roll my eyes and I stand up with a huff.
“Guess we’re going without you,” I sighed sarcastically then I turned to walk away. I heard her throw the blanket off her then she hopped off the bed. I turned back to her with a smirk. She sticks her tongue out at me then she pushes me out the door. I start laughing at how gullible my little sister can be.
“I already texted Eric that we are going to be a little late so there’s no need to rush,” Judy bellowed from the living room. I could hear chatter on the tv which means Judy has made herself comfortable. This is going to be a long morning.
. . . .
I sit in Alpha Eric’s office waiting for him to show up. David told us that Eric would be with us in a minute, but that was ten minutes ago. Judy was sitting on the couch under the window that had a view of the front of the house, and she scrolled through her phone with a board look on her face. Julie couldn’t stop pacing back and forth.
‘This is so frustrating. Just skip this meeting and go find Mate. I long to touch her’
‘Not now Mika. I need to know about these rogue attacks,’ I silently growled. Mika huffs and turns his back to me.'
I sighed. I am not going to hear the end of this.
The door finally opens and the Alpha steps inside.
“Sorry I’m late Jack, I had to help my Mate set up the party for my Betas children. They are going to be shifting for the first time and she wants to make sure everything is perfect,” he explained while going to sit behind his desk.
“No problem at all Eric. I would just like to discuss the matter at hand,” I stated calmly. I could hear Julie stop pacing behind me, but she remains standing.
“Of course. Well David has explained the attacks, but my main concern is not having enough warriors to protect my Pack.” Eric leaned forward and folded his hands on his desk.
I lean back in my chair, and I cross my ankle over my knee. That is so not what I asked.
“I would be happy to supply the warriors if I knew what kind rogues we were dealing with. Are they small groups that keep coming days later? Or is this a type of attack where two rogues stake out your pack then report back to a bigger threat?” I told him. I’ve had to deal with small clusters coming and wandering onto my territory, but they were harmless and easy to capture. Some of them we were able to clean up and invite into our Pack, but others were rabid, and we had to kill them instantly. Once a rogue turns rabid then there is no saving them.
“I think it’s the second one. We were able to kill two rogues, but lately more rogues have been spotted by the border, but they haven’t been attacking or anything. A couple nights ago my son has noticed a dark wolf with glowing red eyes sulk around the woods just outside the Packhouse. We are not sure what or who its after, but just as a precaution I’ve doubled patrol at night to make sure it never attacks.”
Red eyed wolf? Why does that sound familiar?
“Jack? Didn’t our parents old Beta’s wolf have red eyes?” Judy muttered. I blinked my eyes and looked at her in shock. That son of a b***h. I thought that fucker died.
“You have yourself a deal. I will send word to my Pack and get you the necessary warriors you need to protect your pack members,” I declared. The look on Eric's face was that of concern, but it went away when he realized that I was going to help him.
Oh, I’m going to help all right. I will help protect my Mate who happens to be in this pack from my son of a b***h beta who murdered my parents. If he thinks I went easy on him the last time I tortured him, just wait until I capture him again. He won’t know the meaning of the word pain when I am done with him.
“Thank you, Jack, that means a lot. Now would you guys like to attend the party with me?” Eric’s demeanor completely changed, but I remained on edge because of a crazy lunatic out there who might possibly be after my Mate.
My sisters are behind me as we follow Eric out into the hall. They are both mind linking with each other about something because their eyes keep changing to that of their wolves. I roll my eyes at their banter. I have never been able to communicate with them via mind link. I think maybe it’s the fact that I shifted at a young age, but I’m able to communicate with my pack so I don’t know what it could be.
“Oh David. Hey, are you coming down to the party?” Eric asked his Beta when he come stumbling up the stairs. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he was drunk in the middle of the day, but he didn’t smell like alcohol at all.
“Um, yeah I’ll be right down. I just need to clear my head. Jenna has provided me with something for the…. You know,” David whispered the last bit to Eric. Somehow Eric knew exactly what was going on and he just nodded his head. David disappears in what I assume is his office because its across the hall from the room we were just in.
“Everything okay?” I asked as we made our way down the stairs.
“It’s nothing to be concerned about. Jenna is a white wolf and our seer so she has helped David with his grieving because his Mate was killed by rogues a while back,” Eric mentions.
“Oh, how sad,” Judy mumbled.
“It was. He has three children he had to raise without her with all that pain. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I ever lost my Mate,” Eric sighed and shook his head. “But anyway. The party will be out here. Ayla, Kyle and Brad will shift all together in about to hours on that stage there.”
Eric takes us outside to the backyard and shows us around. There is a stage that sits smack dab in the middle of everything. Eric and I stop at the refreshment table, and I grab myself a Coke from the ice chest. I pop the top off and take a sip. My sisters had wandered over to the food table.
I hadn’t realized Eric was talking to me until he started laughing. He must have told a joke. I smile and add a small fake laugh, so he didn’t know I wasn’t listening.
‘Mate! She is near’
I shift my head slightly to see my Ayla standing by the back porch. She is staring back at me with a small smile and her cheeks are pink from her blushing. My smile gets slightly bigger just by the mere sight of her. She is so short that my six foot three inch stature must be giant compared to her.
“I am so grateful that you have agreed to send warriors to protect our Pack. You have no idea the type of rogues that have been sulking around here are like. I still can’t believe we were only able to kill two, but there are more, and they seem to be smarter than the average rogue which is strange.”
My smile drops and I tune back into Eric.
“It's no problem, Eric. I have a feeling that your Pack is very important, and I don't want to see the people here get hurt.” My eyes swing back to Ayla to see her jaw is open and the corner of my lip quirks up in amusement. This woman is so beautiful.
“Well, thank you again. Now I have to go stand with the wife or else I won’t be able to get any tonight,” Eric says with a wink. I can’t help but laugh at his small comment. My best friend makes that same comment about his Mate whenever we went out to the bar in the human town. Eric holds his hand for a handshake, and I give it a firm squeeze to seal our agreement for helping him out. He walks away and wraps his arms around his Mate.
I turn back to my Ayla with a smirk, and we lock eyes again. I was about to start walking towards her when a startled gasp causes me to stop in my tracks. Julie takes off in a sprint toward Ayla’s brother, Brad I believe. They both say Mate pretty loud to where the whole backyard heard which put them in shock. I face Ayla who turns to me with raised eyebrows to which I just shrug my shoulders to her silent question.
Judy sprints off from where she was standing and jumps into Kyle’s arms. He hugs her tightly and swings her around. I feel like the concerned older brother worried about my sisters instead of wanting to hold my Mate closely so one else could look at her.
I started walking toward my Mate, but her and her friend are staring off into the woods with wide unblinking eyes. I follow her gaze and I growl at the sight.
It’s the son of a b***h who should be dead.
'Kill him! I want to taste his blood.’
Mika might be overreacting, but I do want the son of a b***h dead, and I will make sure he stays that way.
I was about to shift into my wolf, but I halted it when three screams rang out in unison. I turn around and I am shocked to see that my Mate and her brothers are shifting into their wolves for the first time. That is good, but judging by the shocked looks on everyone’s faces, it seems like it might be too soon.
The sight of all three of their wolves’ silences everyone completely, not even a whisper was heard.
Kyle and Brad’s wolves are midnight black with gold eyes. That's odd since their eyes are green. Our eyes usually stay when we shift, but they must be a part of something big.
But Ayla. She has blood red fur with dark ocean blue eyes that almost match her human eyes.
She is a red wolf.
A red wolf is one of the rarest of wolves, aside from the white wolf which is a close second, but a red wolf is the fiercest warriors throughout generations. Some have said that the red wolf was the first ever werewolf to exist before the Moon Goddess became mother of all werewolves.
