Chapter 6

1102 Words
“I will not forgive them! They killed my baby! I….” Sophia found herself screaming as she woke up in a hospital bed. “Sophia, please, calm down. You'll be fine…” a deep, reassuring voice said in a soft voice. Sophia turned in the direction where her name was called,, and she gasped at the presence of the man. Seated close to her was Jaxon Lockwood, Ethan's junior brother. He had been outside the country, working and at the same time, studying to pursue his PhD in law. He was way richer than Ethan. “Jaxon, it's you?” Sophia stuttered. It had been decades since she last saw him, but the scar on his face quickly made her remember him. “Yes, it's me.” Jaxon nodded, faintly smiling. Sophia looked around and realized she was in the hospital, and she asked weakly, “W—what are we doing here? I mean, here in the hospital? And why am I on the bed?” Jaxon heaved a sigh before responding. “I arrived from London today and was returning home only to find you lying unconscious on the road.” His tone saddened as he asked, “What's the problem? What about Ethan, my brother?” Immediately, Sophia heard the name, her face twisted into a tight frown—the betrayal and everything flashed through her eyes. Thus she replied, furious, “That b***h! They killed my child…” Unable to hold back her emotions, Sophia began to cry again. The pain was so unbearable for her. Jaxon raised an eyebrow, perplexed as to why she was crying. However, he couldn't ask her about it. He embraced her and after a moment, he said, “We'll talk about this later…..for now, you need to relax. I'll go get the doctor to check on you, okay?” Meanwhile, after Ethan asked that, Isabella quickly responded, her voice slightly shaking, “Ethan, uh…” she faked a smile, “it's nothing. She was just, uh…telling me about an accident that took place when she was coming here. Isn't that true, Anna?” Anna quickly tilted her head in response, feigning a smile too, “Yes, yes, your mother is correct, Ethan. The accident was so horrible that I couldn't bear to watch it. I wish you were with me to see this…” She made sure to keep her voice as steady as she could, but while she was saying that, Isabella gave her the most deadly gaze ever. If looks could kill, Anna would have been dead at that moment. Ethan exchanged glances with both of them, and he only sighed, “Hmm…. alright,” he muttered barely above a whisper, “I'm going out now; I have something to attend to. Goodbye.” He added and left. Just as he left, Sophia gave Anna a bombardier side eye and uttered in rage, “I'll make sure Jaxon knows about you once he comes back home. Ethan, his senior brother, must not marry someone as deadly as you are!” With that, she stomped off. Anna ridiculed her, “Let's see how it plays out.” At the hospital, after the doctor finished checking on Sophia, he informed Jaxon that she was now fine. Jaxon thanked him and went in to see Sophia. Holding her hand and squeezing it softly into his, Jaxon said confidently, “Don’t worry, Sophia, the doctor said you're perfectly ok now.” Sophia gave a faint smile, sitting up, “Thank you, Jaxon, for coming through for me.” “You're my good sister-in-law so anything for you…” Jaxon smiled, completing, “I will do it wholeheartedly.” Hearing that, Sophia's blood boiled and her fists tightened. Her ties with the family ended minutes ago. She's no longer an in-law to anyone. However, she only returned his smile but didn't respond to him. Jaxon’s smile then vanished, and he leaned forward, his face softening, and so was his voice, “Sophia, you were lying helpless on the road before I picked you up; what happened? Where was Ethan?” The name really made her feel like she was going crazy. She didn't want to hear that name again! “Please, Jaxon, I don't want to hear that name.” She managed to say with clenched lips. “Why?” Jaxon furrowed his eyebrows, asking. “Did you guys have any misunderstanding again?” Sophia's breath hitched. She hesitated and then took a deep breath, trying not to be weighed down by emotions, “Yes, and it's over between him and me. They both killed my baby and chased me out.” “How?” Jaxon's mouth fell to the ground in shock. Tears started to crowd Sophia's eyes again. The woe came crushing her down for the second time—how her mother-in-law pushed her down and she lost her baby, how her husband acted coldly to her, just everything. Her heart jumped up in her throat as she started to narrate everything to Jaxon. She wasn't concerned whether he was going to believe it or not. She just wanted someone to know the exact thing that occurred. When she was done narrating, she said, “That's all that happened.” Jaxon gasped audibly, covering his mouth in astonishment. His face flushed with cold fire, “W–why is my mother so wicked to kill her grandson? This is unbelievable!” His heart clenched. “And Ethan….how could he even believe her lies?” He frowned. Then he quickly apologized with a disheartened voice, “I'm sorry, you have to go through all this pain alone.” Sophia forced out a bitter smile, acting as if she were pained. But inside, her blood boiled with rage. “You really don't deserve to be treated like this. They are all just heartless! And I'll make them pay for doing this to you. Trust me!” Sophia sat there and watched Jaxon display his displeasure angrily. She wasn't surprised he believed her since Jaxon had always shown him love, too. “You’re coming with me to that house, Sophia.” Jaxon continued. However, Sophia gently shook her head. “I'm not going back to that den of heartless people.” She retorted. Jaxon held her hands again, his voice carrying emotions as he said, “No, not for them but for me.” His eyes were filled with something Sophia couldn't understand. “You? How?” “Yes, me.” Jaxon replied, his voice determined, “That’s because I want to marry you.”
