Nova’s POV
The fight stopped once he sat down on the edge of the bed and took my wounded hand. This time, I didn’t resist, but it was time to change the approach.
“So… this place is enormous,” I began. “How many rooms does it have? Do you ever get lost?”
He didn’t respond and just started to wipe off the blood, cleaned my wounds, and wrapped my fingers in a small bandage.
“The bikes in the garage were pretty fancy. Do you actually use them for racing, or do you use them to abduct girls?”
He didn’t say anything and focused on wrapping the bandage.
“I bet you’re not always this quiet, or maybe I’m a special case?”
Jax finished wrapping my hand and closed the first aid kit. Then, he stood up and walked towards the bedside table, picked up the food tray – a sandwich, some fruits, and a glass of water.
He grabbed half of the sandwich and offered it to me. “Eat.”
He was dumb if he thought I was some trained dog.
I folded my hands across my chest. “No, thank you. It might be poisoned.”
He took a big bite from the same half, chewed slowly, and swallowed. "It's not poisoned."
I narrowed my eyes. "I never said you loaded it with anything.”
The muscles in his jaw tightened for less than half a second.
I was getting to him. Just a little further and he'll be at my mercy.
For a second something like mirth danced across his features and then vanished. He didn't smile but I could see his shoulders shift.
I noticed the room key and the edge of his phone peeking out of his pocket when he held the plate. I continued talking, making my voice sound saccharine. "For a big bad alpha biker, you are surprisingly patient with obnoxious women. "Most guys would have tossed me out the window by now."
I moved in like I actually cared and stretched out slowly. My fingers scraped against the key and then he shifted his weight, and it slid deeper into his pocket.
Damn it.
I shifted and took the phone instead, slipping it in behind me but not breaking eye contact.
Jax went to the door with the plate. "Rest."
My hands began to buzz with his phone. I hit the volume button to silence before the ring had a chance to chirp. He turned, narrowed his eyes.
"Everything okay?" I replied, blinking innocently while keeping my finger pressed on the side button.
The buzzing stopped. He stared at me for a long time. I smiled wider. “You must have been so hungry from all the work you did today. You should eat too."
He gave me the s**t io glare and I swallowed, nervously laughing.
The phone vibrated against my palm and he started to turn away again.
This time I missed the volume button and the buzz turned to a loud ringtone.
Jax faces me, placing the plate on the table and covered the distance in three large steps.
I shifted back, hiding the phone but he caught my arm, shoved me down and ripped the phone from my hands.
He glanced at the screen. His expression hardened. His voice dropped down into the cold tone. "I'll be right there."
He hung up then let my wrists go. I glared up at him and rubbed my hand on the clamped spot.
Jax looked at me. “Get yourself cleaned up. We have a party to attend.”
I stared, thrown off. "What?"
didn't repeat himself. Just waited.
I pushed up from the bed. “You must be joking.”
He didn't answer. Instead he went for the door. "We leave in an hour."
And he left.
I froze for a full minute. My mind spinning. Party? After everything? What game was he playing now?
I walked around the room for a while and finally used the connected bathroom.
The hot water pounded over me as I scrubbed away the dried blood, sweat, and fear of the night.
I walked out wrapped in a towel and something waited on the bed. A dark burgundy gown with matching heels. The material appeared pricey, silky smooth, and much too raunchy for my liking.
I picked it up. It fitted me perfectly, hugging my curves. I zipped up and wore the silhouette heels.
For one moment, I felt almost normal.
Then my breath shortened. My knees went weak. I felt waves of heat running through my body, radiating pain. I wandered over to the nightstand where I'd left my former waitress outfit.
“Where are they…” My hands trembled as I reached into my pockets. The suppressant seemed too light. I pulled back the cover and swallowed two pills dry.
But nothing helped. I couldn’t see clearly anymore. The pain increased rapidly, slowly traveling up my spine. I fell to the floor, and crawled towards the window, trying to open the thick curtains.
The red, swollen, full moon hung in the sky.
“A blood moon,” I murmured, my voice breaking.
My throat tightened. I coughed, covering my mouth. My blood smeared my palm.
Scared, I forced my body to crawl to the bed and chunked another round of pills.
Nothing helped. My body rejected them. The beast inside me fought, pushing harder each time.
I tried to crawl towards the door, gasping for air. “Please… somebody…”
The agony multiplied, causing me to scream even louder.
“Help…” I sobbed.
My eyes began closing as the door slammed open.
Jax’s figure fell next to me on his knees. His urgent voice calling me over as everything went black.
