Chapter 12

Jax’s POV “Isn’t that…?” I moved, not waiting for Jordan to finish. My shoes hit the floor as I drove my foot into the bedroom door. It broke, splinters of wood flying everywhere. There she was on the floor, her body jerking with her he's clouded. I crossed the room, carrying her in my arms. Her skin was hot, and her breath came in short, sharp, ragged gasps. I ran down the stairs, holding her. “Fetch the Doctor! Now!” The infirmary door burst open as I pushed hard and laid her on the bed. The doctor hurried steps, snapping the gloves over his wrist. “What happened?” He set her to the machine with the nurse helping. “I found her this way.” He checked her pulse and pushed her eyelid up. The panic stared strong in his eyes. “How old is she?” “Nineteen. Why?” The sweat doubled on his forehead. “She seems to be shifting.” “That's not possible. She should have shifted since she was sixteen.” “Exactly. Her wolf is trying to force its way out and it's going to kill her.” I caught sight of her nails. They were darker, grown a bit and I realized he was right. “How do you stop it?” “I…I don't know.” Nova screamed, her spine arched off the mattress. Her fingers curled, her bones cracking loudly. A thick white fur started growing on her forearms, tearing through the pale skin of her neck. She growled. Low and I knew she couldn't take it. “She’s going to die,” I stuttered and rushed to her, holding her arm. “Nova.” “Nova. I need you to fight it. You can't change.” Her growl deepened. Slowly, her muscles eased and she stopped shaking. The white fur disappeared into her skin, her claws shrinking back to her normal nails. “It stopped,” the doctor exhaled. I didn't understand. “That shouldn't be easy.” “Maybe, she's….” His words cut short as the heart monitor dropped. “Oh no,” he gasped. “Her heart's failing.” “Fix it,” I ordered. He set to working, his Adam's apple bobbing but he stopped as he touched the IV line, looking dejected. “Why are you stopping?” “Her body is reacting to the pain. I don't know how long she can endure it.” “And?” “She has to fight it by herself.” I held back the sick laughter. The numbers dropped and I felt the worst was getting close. “Help her or I'll make sure you go with her.” He met my dead cold glare, his voice cracking. “There's a way. We could increase the painkiller dose but…” “What?!” “She might die.” Her scent got faint by the second. “Do it!” I ordered. “Alpha, if her heart crashes—” “I said do it.” I lashed. “If she dies, you're going with her.” He rushes the drug into the needle and pushed it into her IV. Her breathing stabilized, and Suddenly, her body seized. The monitor spiked rapidly. “Her body is rejecting it…” the doctor panicked. I watched as her skin turned paler. The erratic beeping from the monitor grew louder and then… A long flat line showed on the monitor, the room echoed with the unbroken tone. Everything stopped for a moment. The doctor froze. “No… no, no—her heart’s gone into arrest—” I didn’t hear the rest. I pushed him aside, his body hitting the hard wall. My hand pressed on her chest, locking over her sternum and I drove down. Hard. The second passing by with every push. She didn't move. I didn't stop. “Alpha, wait, we need to—” “Shut up.” I kept the rhythm, pushing my palm harder, refusing to let her die. “Don’t you dare,” I growled, leaning over her. “You don’t get to die. Until I say so.” The flatline screamed on. I got no pulse, no movement, on my hand trying to get a heartbeat. The doctor scrambled behind me to his feet, his hand fumbling for something. “Nova. Come on.” I made another compression and another. The sweat sliding down my temple, falling down my eyelashes. “Breathe,” my voice dropped. “Fight.” One more push. A second passed and then I pushed harder. I heard a twitch. “There.” I continued and the monitor flickered. One blip then silence. Another blip and… “Again—” the doctor breathed. The line jerked on the monitor. It stuttered then caught up. Beep…Beep… beep… The sound rose and I kept at it until the beeping rang out. I stopped, watching and breathed out in relief as her pulse stabilized. Her chest rose and fell on its own. She was alive. I staggered back a step, drawing in my breath. Behind me the doctor exhaled. My eyes didn't leave her side for a second. My hands tighten into fists at my sides. That was close. I dropped to the chair beside her bed, and ran a hand down my face, my body finally resigning to the stress. The feeling of something new ripped inside me. ~ Hours passed. The doctor quietly wrote down her charts and raised his head, taking a printed blood panel from the nurse. “Is she suicidal?” My head snapped up. “I doubt that.” “That's weird.” “What is it?” He handed the files to me. “She has traces of stilled suppressants in her blood.” Each figure blared into my head as I read the dosage. “I was able to get some of it out of her blood. But the effects are still there. For now, her body is only going to keep getting weaker and…” My eyes lifted from the page, pinning him. “Finish it.” “She might not survive the next transformation unless she is marked by her mate.” The words hung between us. “Would you like me to do anything else, Alpha.” “Leave us.” For the rest of the night I watched her. My hand soaking the wet clothes and cleaning every trace of sweat off her body. The sun rose and I was still in my spot, not sleeping a wink. My wolf, usually loud, was silent. I pulled my phone out and walked to the window, keeping one eye on the bed. “I want every detail on Thessalyra Nova Voss and her ties to the obsidian pack.” The receiver sighed in tiredness. “Jax, you know you're playing with fire. The obsidian's never let their secret out. Anyone who knows anything is either dead or missing.” “All the reason I want it.” “Bro. I sure hope you know what you're doing.” “I do.” I ended the call and returned to her bedside. Her small hands caught my attention. I reached down, taking it in mine. They were small, cute. A warm smile crept on my face. “Stubborn little thing.” My thumb brushed her knuckles before I could stop myself. Rays of sunlight touched her face, rousing a blow. I brushed the strand of hair from her face, pressing it to the back of her ear, my face close enough to hear her breathing. Her heart shaped lips calling out to me. I paused, shaking the thoughts out of my head. I couldn't take advantage of her state. I had barely moved when…her eyelashes fluttered open. Oh no. Her eyes widened, fixed on my face. Then, she screamed. “Aaah!” She kicked my stomach, pushing me off her and…. Smack. My face tilted sideways to the impact. “You pervert!” She screeched.
