**Elena POV**
The shots were so loud they seemed to shake the walls and I felt Adrian grab me and pull me down to the floor, felt his weight covering me protecting me, and then everything happened at once.
Our bodies hit the floor and there was smoke in the air from the gunshots and someone was screaming, high and terrible, and I realized it was Charlotte and my ears were ringing so badly I couldn't hear anything else.
Adrian's weight on top of me shifted and then got heavier and I tried to push him off so I could breathe but he wasn't moving right, wasn't responding when I said his name.
"Adrian?" I managed to get out from under him and that's when I saw it.
Blood.
So much blood spreading across his chest, soaking through his shirt, pooling on the floor beneath him.
