Five months had passed since Adrian was shot and I was twenty-four weeks pregnant now which meant the twins were technically viable, could survive if they were born early, but Dr. Chen's face when she said that told me surviving wasn't the same as thriving.
"Your heart is struggling," she said looking at my latest test results. "The strain of carrying twins is more than we anticipated and your arrhythmia is getting worse."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we might need to deliver early if your heart can't handle carrying them to full term." Dr. Chen set down her tablet. "Right now we're monitoring you closely but if things deteriorate we'll have no choice."
