The battlefield

, Maggie thought he might be homeless or perhaps drunk. But as she got closer, she noticed the way he moved. It was jerky, as if he was struggling to keep his balance. His skin was pale, almost gray, and there was a strange smell lingering in the air around him, something sour and unsettling. “Are you okay, sir?” she called out, concerned. The man turned to her slowly, his eyes glassy and unfocused. “Help… me…,” he mumbled, his voice hoarse and barely audible. Then he lurched forward, stumbling into the street, almost falling into the path of an oncoming car. Maggie’s heart raced. She rushed forward to pull him back to the sidewalk. “Watch out!” she shouted, and the car swerved, honking loudly as it passed. As she steadied the man, he leaned into her, his breath ragged and foul. “So hungry…” he whispered. Panic bubbled in Maggie’s chest. This was not right. “Stay here,” she said, stepping back. She took out her phone to call for help, but before she could dial, she noticed his eyes shifting, focusing on her in a way that made her skin crawl. Then, suddenly, he charged at her. Maggie barely had time to react; she sidestepped just in time, but stumbled and fell to the ground. The man lunged at her, arms flailing. She quickly managed to kick him away, her instincts taking over. “Get away from me!” she shouted, scrambling to her feet. He stumbled backward, momentarily dazed, which gave her a fraction of a second to escape. She ran toward the entrance of the hospital. As she burst through the doors, she felt her heart pounding against her ribs. Inside, the waiting room was busy, filled with families and patients waiting to be seen. A nurse at the reception desk looked up, concern etched on her face as Maggie rushed in. “What happened?” the nurse asked, noticing Maggie’s breathlessness and wide eyes. “There’s a man outside… he’s acting strangely. I think he—” Before she could finish, the man pushed through the door, his eyes wild. The atmosphere changed instantly. Patients turned, startled by the loud thud of the door and the sight of the man stumbling in. He opened his mouth, revealing teeth that looked like they were gnashing together in a fit of hunger. “Help… me!” he shrieked, and in an instant, he lunged at the nearest patient, a young woman with a baby in her arms. “No!” Maggie yelled, instinctively leaping forward. She grabbed a nearby chair, brandishing it like a weapon as chaos erupted in the waiting room. People screamed, scattering in all directions. “Maggie! Get back!” shouted Tom, one of the doctors, as he rushed in from the back. He saw the man nearing the young mother and quickly tackled him. The two men grappled on the floor, and within moments, it became clear—this was not just a case of a normal person having a bad day. The man was strong, fueled by a desperation that seemed unnatural. Tom struggled to subdue him, but there was a frightful glow in the man’s eyes, an insatiable need as he fought against Tom’s grasp. “Call security! Now!” Tom yelled to Maggie, who was frozen in shock. She snapped back to reality and dashed to grab a phone from the reception. As she dialed, the scene turned into complete pandemonium. The man escaped Tom’s grip, knocking him aside, and lunged again, this time toward another patient. The sight was horrifying. Maggie watched in disbelief as Tom managed to roll onto his feet and intercepted the man again, desperation and adrenaline evident on his face. He was trying to reason with him, hold him back while trying to protect the others, but it was already too late. One of the hospital staff finally arrived, a security guard, and without hesitation, he rushed into the fray. But the man, now fully engaged in the chaos, lashed out wildly. The guard reached for his baton, but it wasn’t enough. The man's strength was unnatural, and he swung wildly, not even seeming to feel the pain from the blows he received. After a short struggle, the guard was knocked to the ground, and panic flooded the waiting room. More people began to scream, and Maggie felt her heart race even faster. “Stay back!” she yelled, stepping forward, chair still raised as a makeshift weapon. Suddenly, the fight shifted, and the man turned and charged toward her. Just as she was about to swing the chair, Tom and the security guard tackled him from opposite sides. The man fell hard to the ground, but there was no relief. Tom tried to hold him down, but the man wasn’t giving in. Instead, he writhed beneath them, snarling like a wild animal. The guard scrambled to grab handcuffs from his belt, but it was a futile effort. “Get the EMTs here! Now!” Tom roared, still gripping the man whose strength only seemed to grow. Just then, the lobby doors burst open again, and more figures stumbled in—more of them, just like the first man, with wild eyes and disheveled clothes. “We need to get out of here!” Maggie screamed, panic surging through her. The men began screaming, and the hospital descended into chaos. The sounds of desperation and fear mixed, echoing in the once-calm walls. Maggie looked around, frantically searching for a way out. The exits were crowded, and people were pushing, desperate to escape. As the reality of the situation sunk in, she could feel the panic gripping her. “Get everyone to the back!” shouted Tom, managing to pull himself away from the fray, panting heavily. “Move now!” As people began to shuffle toward the back exit, Maggie took one last look at the chaos unfolding. The hospital, once a place of healing, had turned into a battleground. This was only the beginning.
