Chapter Six: The Thing She Didn’t Plan For

519 Words
Elena didn’t sleep that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again—Noah stepping in front of her without hesitation, his voice calm, his body already prepared for danger. Not dramatic. Not reckless. Protective in a way that felt instinctive… practiced. Not while I’m with you. The words echoed louder than fear ever had. By morning, she knew something had shifted. At the office, Elena found herself distracted. She stared at reports without reading them, nodded through meetings she normally controlled with precision. For the first time in years, power felt… incomplete. She needed certainty. That evening, instead of heading straight home, she told Noah, “Drive me somewhere quiet.” He didn’t ask questions. They ended up by the sea, the waves rolling in steady rhythm, the air heavy with salt and truth. Elena stepped out of the car first, wrapping her arms around herself. “You could’ve walked away yesterday,” she said without turning. “You didn’t.” Noah joined her, keeping a respectful distance. “It wasn’t a choice.” That answer unsettled her more than anything else. “I hired you to drive,” she said softly. “To stay invisible.” “I know.” “And yet,” she continued, her voice tightening, “you put yourself in danger for me. Not because you’re paid to—but because you wanted to.” Silence. Then Noah spoke carefully. “Some instincts don’t care about titles or salaries.” Elena turned to face him. “And what about your instincts with me? Are those professional too?” His gaze dropped—for the first time, uncertainty flickering across his face. “That’s where things get complicated.” Her heart clenched. In that moment, Elena saw the truth clearly—sharp and unavoidable. She hadn’t chosen Noah because he was weak. She hadn’t chosen him because he was beneath her. She had chosen him because somewhere deep down, she sensed he was safe. And now, she realized something terrifying. She didn’t just need Noah as part of a plan. She needed him because the world around her was no longer safe. “I started something,” she admitted quietly. “I thought I was in control. I thought I was using you.” Noah looked at her, eyes steady but gentle. “And now?” Her voice cracked just enough to betray her. “Now I don’t know if I can protect myself without you.” The confession tasted like surrender. Elena Cross—who never needed anyone—felt the weight of that truth settle in her chest. Noah didn’t step closer. He didn’t touch her. But his presence grounded her all the same. “Then let me do what I’m good at,” he said. “Protecting.” She swallowed hard. This wasn’t part of her revenge. This wasn’t part of the game. This was trust—raw, dangerous, and completely unplanned. And Elena knew, with a mix of fear and longing, that once you needed someone like that… There was no pretending your heart wasn’t already involved.
