Chapter 7: Too Close to Ignore
One room.
One night.
No escape.
After the explosion, Umar managed to get Tife out of the warehouse just in time. They drove for hours without speaking until they reached an old cabin hidden deep in the forest.
It wasn't safe.
It was simply the only place no one would think to look.
The power was out.
Only the soft glow of a lantern lit the small room.
Rain poured heavily outside, while thunder echoed through the night.
Tife sat quietly, wrapping a blanket around herself. Her mind replayed everything that had happened.
The gunshots.
The explosion.
Idris.
"Do you think he's alive?" she asked softly.
Umar stared into the darkness.
"I don't know."
Silence settled between them.
For the first time since they met, neither of them had the strength to pretend everything was under control.
Tife finally broke the silence.
"Who am I, Umar?"
He closed his eyes.
"You deserve the truth."
She waited.
"Your real name... isn't Tife."
Her heart stopped.
"What?"
"Tife is the name you were given to protect you."
She shook her head in disbelief.
"No... you're lying."
"I wish I was."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"You were hidden."
"From who?"
"From the people who destroyed your family."
Tife's breathing became uneven.
"My family?"
Umar nodded.
"They weren't ordinary people."
"They were one of the most powerful families in the country."
Every word felt heavier than the last.
"Power attracts enemies," Umar continued.
"When your parents realized your life was in danger, they made the hardest decision of all."
"They sent you away."
Tears filled Tife's eyes.
"So... everything I believed about my life was a lie?"
"It was the only way to keep you alive."
She lowered her head, unable to process everything.
After a long silence, she asked the question that had been haunting her.
"And Idris?"
Umar's expression changed.
"He got too close to you."
Tife frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he started caring about you more than the mission allowed."
She looked away.
"And you?"
Umar let out a slow breath.
His voice dropped to almost a whisper.
"I never planned to."
A long pause filled the room.
Then he looked into her eyes.
"Now..."
"...that's the problem."
Outside, the rain continued to fall.
Inside, two hearts beat louder than the storm.
Neither of them realized that someone was watching the cabin from the shadows.
