Chapter 13: The Secret Umar Kept The hall was silent. Every eye was fixed on Umar. Tife clutched the photograph with trembling hands. "You knew my father?" she asked again, barely above a whisper. Umar met her gaze. "Yes." The single word echoed through the room. Farouk smiled, clearly enjoying the tension. "Go on," he said. "Tell her everything." Umar took a slow breath. "Your father saved my life many years ago. I was just a teenager with nowhere to go. He took me in, trained me, and treated me like family." Tife listened without blinking. "He trusted me with one responsibility above all others..." Umar continued. "If anything ever happened to him, I was to find you... and keep you alive." Tears filled Tife's eyes. "So... that's why you've been protecting me." Umar nodded. "I made him a promise." Idris stepped forward. "And you left out the most important part." Umar's jaw tightened. "There was no need." "There is now," Idris replied. Farouk folded his arms. "She's finally ready to hear it." Tife looked between them. "What are you all hiding from me?" Idris answered first. "The night your family was attacked... Umar was there." Tife's heart pounded. She turned to Umar. "You were there?" "I was." "Then why didn't you save them?" Pain flashed across Umar's face. "I tried." His voice was heavy with guilt. "I fought until I couldn't stand anymore. Your father forced me to leave with you. He knew if we both stayed... none of us would survive." Tife's tears spilled over. "So he sacrificed himself..." Umar lowered his head. "To save you." Before anyone could speak again, a loud explosion shook the mansion. The windows shattered. Screams erupted across the hall. "Everyone down!" Umar shouted. The lights went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Gunfire exploded from outside. Panic spread as people ran in every direction. Umar grabbed Tife's hand. "Stay behind me!" Idris drew his weapon and moved toward the entrance. "They're inside!" Masked men stormed through the broken doors. One of them pointed directly at Tife. "There she is!" Farouk slowly stepped backward, a strange smile forming on his lips. Tife noticed. "You knew this would happen..." Farouk didn't answer. He simply walked away while chaos consumed the hall. Umar's eyes narrowed. "He set us up." Another explosion shook the building. Smoke filled the air. Idris fired toward the attackers. "We have to get her out!" Umar nodded. Without hesitation, he pulled Tife toward a hidden passage behind the grand staircase. As the stone door closed behind them, the sounds of gunfire faded. They had escaped. For now. But Farouk was gone. And whoever had ordered the attack was still waiting in the shadows. End of Chapter 13
