The Intruder

245 Words
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the mansion. Adrian immediately stepped in front of me. “Stay behind me,” he ordered. Before I could argue, he pulled me toward the hallway. The servants were already screaming as security guards rushed toward the front entrance. “Someone call the police!” one of them shouted. My heart pounded as Adrian tightened his grip on my hand. “Don’t let go,” he said. We reached the grand staircase just as a masked figure ran across the living room. One of the guards chased after the intruder, but the man disappeared into the darkness. “Lock every door!” Adrian commanded. The mansion fell into chaos. Suddenly, the lights went out. Everything became silent. I could barely see Adrian beside me. Then I felt someone brush past my shoulder. A hand grabbed my wrist. I opened my mouth to scream. “Shh,” a woman’s voice whispered. It wasn’t Adrian. She slipped something into my hand. “The truth is inside,” she murmured. “Read it before he finds it.” The lights flickered back on. The woman was gone. Adrian rushed toward me. “Are you hurt?” I slowly opened my hand. A small flash drive lay in my palm. Before I could hide it, Adrian saw it. His face turned pale. “Where did you get that?” he demanded. I had never seen fear in Adrian’s eyes before. Until now.
