The Woman In Tears

229 Words
The entire hall fell silent. Every guest turned to stare at the young woman standing at the entrance. Tears streamed down her face as she struggled to catch her breath. “Adrian,” she pleaded, “you can’t do this.” I looked from her to my new husband. His expression hardened, but he didn’t seem surprised to see her. “Leave,” he said coldly. She shook her head. “You’re making a terrible mistake.” My heart pounded. “Who is she?” No one answered. The woman wiped her tears and looked directly at me. “You don’t remember me, do you?” I frowned, confused. “We met five years ago,” she continued. “Everything changed because of that night.” I searched my memory, but nothing came back. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I don’t know who you are.” She let out a bitter laugh. “Of course you don’t.” Adrian stepped between us. “That’s enough.” His voice was sharp enough to silence the room. He took my hand and led me outside without another word. As the limousine pulled away, I couldn’t stop thinking about what she had said. Five years ago. What happened that night? Adrian looked out the window before speaking. “You’ll remember soon enough.” His words made my blood run cold.
