The BlowFor a moment, the words made no sense. “What?” The humming sound grew louder, as did the shouts of the men, now once again behind me. At least a dozen gunshots rang out, some ricocheting around the room, and Jack ducked down. Jack’s voice came forth as if from nowhere. “I should’ve anticipated this.” When he appeared again, he rose slowly, his face twisted in pain. A red blot spread bit by bit over the outer left shoulder of his white jacket. He spoke softly, as if to himself. “It wasn’t supposed to go this way.” Then Jack looked at me, and spoke with difficulty, teeth gritted. “What I’ve told you is true, Mrs. Spadros. Hart and your mother were lovers. Probably still are. He helped her buy the brothel. So you both would be safe. He loves you. Well, as best as that twisted mind
