The night air was cool, laced with the faint scent of rain as Adrian led Elena out of the restaurant. His hand stayed at the small of her back, guiding her with casual ease — but his gaze kept sweeping the street, as if measuring shadows.
They’d barely taken three steps toward the waiting black car when the first sound shattered the calm.
Glass exploded.
The window of a parked sedan burst outward, shards scattering across the pavement like diamonds under the streetlamps.
“Down!” Adrian barked, pulling Elena to the ground just as a second shot rang out.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. The world shrank to the sound of gunfire, the acrid scent of gunpowder, and the press of Adrian’s body shielding hers.
A black SUV at the corner roared to life, its headlights slicing through the darkness.
Adrian’s voice was low but urgent in her ear. “Stay behind me. Don’t argue.”
He moved like he’d done this a thousand times — one hand drawing the sleek black pistol from inside his jacket, the other steadying her as they slipped between two parked cars for cover.
The SUV’s doors flew open. Three men spilled out, weapons glinting in the light. The same faces from the restaurant.
Adrian didn’t hesitate. Two shots, precise and controlled, cracked through the air. One man dropped instantly, clutching his shoulder.
“Go!” he ordered Elena, shoving her toward the waiting black car. The driver, wide-eyed, threw the door open.
She dove inside, chest heaving. Through the tinted glass, she saw Adrian advance on the remaining men — no hesitation, no mercy.
It wasn’t just protection anymore. This was war.
The last thing she heard before the driver slammed on the accelerator was Adrian’s voice, cold as steel:
“You should have stayed in your shadows.”
The city lights blurred as the car sped away. Elena gripped the seat, her mind spinning. She wasn’t sure which scared her more — the men trying to kill them, or the man who had just saved her without breaking a sweat.
The Chase Through Shadows
The tires screeched against wet asphalt, the black sedan slicing through the late-night traffic. Elena’s hands were clenched so tightly on the leather seat her knuckles had gone pale.
Behind them, the SUV’s headlights reappeared, weaving through cars like a predator stalking prey.
“Faster!” she gasped.
“I’m trying, ma’am,” the driver replied, his voice tight. “But they’re—”
A deafening bang cut him off. The rear windshield exploded inward, a bullet embedding into the dashboard.
Elena screamed and ducked instinctively.
The driver cursed under his breath, swerving hard to the right. “They’re not giving up!”
“Of course they’re not,” came a voice from the side — and Elena’s blood froze.
From the passenger seat beside the driver, a man she hadn’t noticed before turned his head slowly toward her. His grin was twisted, his eyes cold.
“Boss says you don’t make it out tonight.”
He reached into his coat.
“Adrian!” Elena shouted, but the man had already drawn a short black blade, glinting under the passing streetlights.
Before she could move, the car door on her side flew open — Adrian lunged in from the street, his shoulder slamming into the traitor with bone-cracking force.
The knife clattered to the floor.
Adrian’s voice was pure venom. “I told you to check the car, you i***t,” he snarled at the driver.
Without waiting for a response, he dragged the traitor halfway out the window and tossed him into the rushing road. The man’s scream vanished under the roar of tires.
The SUV behind them accelerated, closing in. Adrian slid into the seat beside Elena, grabbing the driver’s shoulder. “Left. Now!”
They skidded into a narrow alley, the sedan’s frame scraping against brick walls as sparks flew. The SUV followed — too wide for the turn — and slammed into the corner, its front end crumpling.
Elena’s chest heaved. Her ears rang from the chaos. But Adrian was already pulling out his phone, speaking in a low tone that sent a shiver down her spine.
“They found us earlier than expected,” he said to whoever was on the line. “Clean up the mess. And prepare the safehouse. She stays with me now.”
Elena swallowed hard, realizing that whatever world she had just stepped into… there was no way back.
