Chapter Six: A Dangerous Game

1101 Words
The early morning light filtered through the sheer curtains of Luca’s villa, casting a soft glow on Elena’s bare skin. She lay awake in the tangled sheets, staring at the ceiling as reality clawed its way back into her mind. What had she done? Luca was still asleep beside her, his arm draped over her waist possessively, his breath slow and even. She could feel the steady rise and fall of his chest against her back, the warmth of his body seeping into her own. It would be so easy to close her eyes, to pretend that the world outside this room didn’t exist. But she couldn’t. She carefully slid out from under his arm, holding her breath as she moved. The moment she was free, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood, reaching for her discarded dress. The fabric felt foreign in her hands now, a reminder of how quickly she had surrendered to something she had sworn she wouldn’t. “Elena.” His voice was low, husky from sleep, but laced with something that sent a shiver down her spine. She turned to find him propped up on one elbow, his gaze sharp despite the early hour. “You’re leaving.” It wasn’t a question. Elena swallowed hard, slipping the dress over her head. “I shouldn’t have stayed.” Luca’s expression darkened as he sat up fully, the sheets pooling around his waist, exposing his sculpted torso. “You keep telling yourself that, but you keep coming back.” She clenched her jaw. “This can’t happen again.” Luca swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing in one fluid motion. He closed the distance between them before she could react, his fingers gripping her chin, forcing her to look at him. “You’re lying to yourself, Elena.” Her pulse pounded in her throat. “Let me go.” He studied her for a moment before releasing her, but there was a knowing smirk on his lips. “You can leave if you want. But you won’t get far.” Her eyes narrowed. “Is that a threat?” Luca chuckled, but there was no humor in it. “It’s a fact.” She turned on her heel, forcing herself to walk away. Each step felt like a battle against something far greater than herself. But as she reached the door, Luca’s voice stopped her cold. “You’re already mine, Elena. You just haven’t accepted it yet.” She didn’t turn around. Instead, she gritted her teeth, yanked the door open, and walked out. --- The drive back to her apartment was a blur. The city was just beginning to stir, the streets bathed in the golden hue of sunrise. As she pulled into the underground parking lot, her phone buzzed in the passenger seat. Unknown Number. Her fingers hesitated over the screen before she answered. “Hello?” Silence. Then, a distorted voice crackled through the speaker. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Elena.” A chill ran down her spine. “Who is this?” More silence. Then, a low chuckle. “You should be more careful about the company you keep.” The call ended abruptly, leaving her staring at the screen in growing dread. Luca. She had barely stepped away from him, and already, shadows were creeping into her life. --- By the time she stepped into her apartment, her nerves were frayed. She locked the door behind her, pressing her back against it as she exhaled shakily. She needed to clear her head. Needed to remind herself who she was before Luca DeLuca had walked into her life and turned everything upside down. She was strong. Independent. Untouchable. And yet, her hands still trembled. A knock at the door nearly sent her heart through her ribs. She hesitated, then peered through the peephole. Her stomach dropped. Luca. She debated not answering, but she knew better. Luca wasn’t the kind of man who walked away when ignored. Taking a deep breath, she unlatched the door and pulled it open, arms crossed over her chest. “You don’t waste time, do you?” she muttered. Luca leaned casually against the doorframe, but there was nothing casual about the intensity in his gaze. “Neither do the people who are after you.” Elena stiffened. “What are you talking about?” He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his presence swallowing up the room. “That call you got earlier? That wasn’t random.” Her pulse spiked. “How do you know about that?” Luca’s jaw tightened. “Because I know exactly who wants you dead.” A cold wave of fear crashed over her. “What the hell have you gotten me into?” Luca closed the distance between them, his hands gripping her shoulders. “You were in this long before you met me, Elena. You just didn’t know it.” Her mind raced, trying to piece together the implications of his words. “Who?” Luca exhaled slowly. “The Costa Syndicate.” She felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her. The Costa Syndicate was one of the most ruthless criminal organizations in the country. And now, apparently, they wanted her dead. “Why?” she breathed. Luca hesitated before answering. “Because they think you belong to me.” The room spun. “I don’t—” “Doesn’t matter.” Luca’s grip tightened. “They think you do. And that makes you a target.” Elena’s heart pounded as the reality of the situation sank in. She had spent years clawing her way to the top, carefully crafting a life where no one had power over her. And now, in the span of a single night, she was caught in the crossfire of a world she never wanted to be part of. She swallowed hard. “What do we do?” Luca’s expression darkened. “We fight.” A chill ran down her spine at the raw certainty in his voice. He made it sound so simple. As if war was inevitable. Maybe it was. As she looked into Luca’s stormy blue eyes, she realized she had two choices. She could run. Try to disappear before the Costa Syndicate found her. Or she could stand her ground and fight alongside the one man who could protect her. And that terrified her most of all. Because if she chose Luca, she knew she’d never escape him. And a part of her wasn’t sure she wanted to.
