The crumpled note was still in my pocket.
I could feel it there as I stood outside his door, trying to decide if I should open it or not. The paper was soft because I had folded and unfolded it so many times. Those three words had completely broken something inside me, they left me standing in the cold morning with nothing but a ruined blouse and a secret growing inside me.
My duffel bag was at my feet. I had packed it in total panic after Odessa left, just throwing my clothes and the little bit of money I had inside.
