I read the courthouse subject line again, then looked down at the portfolio on the cobblestones. A cold wind moved through the alley. I had the mansion and the company, but nowhere I wanted to go. Rain started with two cold drops and thickened within minutes. Shopkeepers pulled out awnings while people crowded beneath them. I stayed at the workshop door. Water darkened my suit, filled my shoes, and ran through the portfolio’s seams. By the time the streetlamps came on, the papers inside had softened into a wet mass. I was still there.
