Just as Lin Hao was about to return the challenging look, the alpha zombie suddenly stood up and started walking towards him. Lin Hao, terrified, quickly dashed to the side.
Despite his speed being only 5, his burst of energy, especially when fleeing, was still impressive. But clearly, Lin Hao had misunderstood something.
Not only did the alpha zombie stand up, but the other zombies around it also rose. Yet, the corpse on the ground remained intact. Since when did these zombies become so wasteful?
Lin Hao was more than willing to scavenge leftovers; after all, eating a person or a rat felt equally burdensome to him.
When Lin Hao approached the corpse, he finally understood why the zombies had moved away. The body was slowly rising. It was a very delicate-looking girl, and Lin Hao could barely recognize her as the girl who had taken instant noodles beside him in the supermarket.
Why barely? The girl had been bitten so badly that her front and back were unrecognizable. Her chest was full of bloody holes, one ear was missing, and her face was pitted, revealing gray bone in some places.
Once she stood up, she snarled at Lin Hao. Although a zombie’s snarl was just a hissing sound, Lin Hao surprisingly understood it.
Despite their low intelligence, it seemed zombies had a way to communicate with each other.
Lin Hao was tempted to try what zombie flesh tasted like, but seeing all the bites on her from other zombies, he decided against it.
The circle of zombies that had stood up began to slowly wander away. Lin Hao had a feeling that someday he would have to fight that alpha zombie, but now was not the time to dwell on it. The medical lab, where he hoped to find lab mice, was on the eighth floor.
He eyed the building, guessing there might still be survivors on the eighth floor. He planned to avoid any noise to avoid any desperate people rushing at him with knives.
The elevator was out of order, but Lin Hao’s stamina, enhanced by the T-virus, allowed him to climb the stairs swiftly. It didn't take long before he reached the eighth floor.
As he had imagined, the eighth floor was crawling with zombies, with no human in sight.
Lin Hao strolled through the corridors like a normal person on a Sunday walk, searching for his destination, the DNA lab. Lab mice were often used in experiments, especially those requiring injections.
He slowly opened the lab door, finding it unlocked and quiet inside, suggesting no one was there to confront him.
Lin Hao wasn’t a medical student, but he had a close friend who was—a girl. They had almost reached the pinnacle of human connection before the apocalypse struck.
During their escape, Lin Hao had watched her slowly turn into a zombie before pushing her off a high building.
Before the apocalypse, she often invited him to the medical lab, where she took care of lab mice kept in a large glass container. The container had food and water, but Lin Hao doubted the mice had survived for half a year.
The container could only hold so much food, barely enough for a week. Lin Hao didn’t expect much but came out of nostalgia.
To his shock, the twenty-plus mice in the container were plump and healthy, the container clean as if regularly maintained.
When Lin Hao thought of someone cleaning it, he turned abruptly, sensing danger.
“Ah, a big zombie!”
As expected, a person, wielding a knife, charged at him. But when Lin Hao saw the attacker, he couldn’t help but laugh.
Before him stood a petite girl, about 4’6”, holding a fruit knife, calling him a “big zombie” in a childish voice.
The girl was around twelve or thirteen, a typical little girl, though extremely thin and frail. It was obvious she hadn’t eaten in a long time.
Lin Hao slowly approached the girl, who teared up and backed away, clearly wanting to escape.
As he predicted, she threw the knife and ran out the door.
Although the girl’s scent made Lin Hao want to eat her, seeing her reminded him of his own sister, who was around her age. He wondered how she was doing now.
Feeling a pang of sadness, Lin Hao grabbed the knife from the floor and hurried after the girl.
Outside, zombies roamed freely. If the girl fell into their hands, she wouldn’t even become a zombie.
As he chased her, he heard her calling for help, “Sister, save me!”
So, she had a sister. Lin Hao thought of the girl from downstairs who had been brutally bitten.
The girl headed for the emergency exit, which Lin Hao had used to come up. She was lucky, not attracting any zombies’ attention as she ran.
Lin Hao shook his head and continued the chase.
To an observer, it might look like a scene of a maniac pursuing a little girl, but Lin Hao only wanted to save her. Her screaming might attract other zombies, which would be disastrous.
They reached the first floor, where Lin Hao finally caught up. He thought, “She’s just a little girl with limited stamina. I almost didn’t catch her.” He considered his speed stat of 5 and realized he couldn’t even catch up with a little girl.
But then he saw why she had stopped running—a horde of zombies blocked her path.
The girl was trembling, her eyes swollen from crying. Despite her fear, she still tried to struggle, but now she turned back, seeing Lin Hao with the knife.
At that moment, she collapsed in despair, wetting herself in fear.
Lin Hao held the fruit knife, eyeing the horde, particularly a tall zombie at the front. The other zombies roared at the girl but didn’t dare surpass the tall one. It was the alpha zombie Lin Hao had encountered twice before.
