That woman

875 Words
Lin Hao instinctively stopped his car when he noticed a woman running alongside his window. As Lin Hao's attention was on the radio, he had lowered his speed to around twenty miles per hour, so the fact that someone could catch up didn't immediately alarm him. But, under these circumstances, it definitely should have. Not only because of the environment, but also because of the woman’s attire. She was armed to the teeth, and despite his current speed, who had ever seen a woman capable of running at thirty miles per hour? The woman calmly knocked on Lin Hao’s window, and he, understanding her signal, stopped and rolled it down. Lin Hao knew she wasn't an ordinary person, but she probably thought he was. Given the current state of things, she likely couldn't see Lin Hao’s pale face and sharp teeth through his grimy, worn appearance. As Lin Hao pondered how to communicate with the woman, she decisively pulled out a gun and jabbed it into his neck. Lin Hao was stunned. “Isn’t she part of a rescue team? What does she mean by jabbing me with a gun? And what kind of gun is this? How should I react?” Seeing Lin Hao’s stunned expression, the woman, equally confused, muttered, “Why didn’t he go down?” and then jabbed him again. Lin Hao realized it must be a tranquilizer gun. It was clear she wasn’t here to rescue him. He decided to play along and pretended to pass out. “I’m doing my best to match your performance...” Lin Hao sang in his mind. “Can you not sing? Do you know how awful you sound?” Goudan complained. “You heard that?” “...You’re something else!” Goudan then fell silent. The woman, seeing him finally collapse, was puzzled but didn’t overthink it. Lin Hao, covered in grime, looked like he hadn’t bathed in ages. The dim light made his face appear gaunt and emaciated, convincing her even more that he was just a regular escapee. Although A City wasn’t a major metropolis, it had a population in the hundreds of thousands. Even if 80% had turned into zombies, 20% were still struggling to survive, and it wasn’t unusual for desperate people to drive out in search of food. As the woman dragged Lin Hao out of the car and dumped him on the ground, he finally considered something he should have thought of earlier. “Who is this woman? Why is she capturing me?” Lin Hao asked Goudan. Goudan, having decided to remain silent, didn’t answer, leaving Lin Hao with no response. “Capture successful, capture successful,” the woman reported. Lin Hao heard these words clearly and felt a wave of curiosity. Capture? Zombies or humans? Why capture? What has happened in the outside world during the six months I’ve been hiding in the school? These were Lin Hao’s burning questions. The woman, in her tight leather suit and helmet, with her superhuman speed, was a mystery. Lin Hao pondered his options. This woman clearly had no good intentions, and given her displayed strength, escaping seemed futile. If he ran, she’d catch him immediately. Moreover, she had a rifle slung on her back. Alright, regardless of her motives, he couldn’t act rashly. Lin Hao felt weak for the first time. If he were stronger, he wouldn’t be in this predicament. Since he couldn’t tell if she was a threat, he didn’t dare attack or flee. If he were powerful, he could control the situation effortlessly. But then, the woman’s next actions made Lin Hao furious. She took off her helmet, revealing long, shiny black hair. Her mature, seductive face emerged in Lin Hao’s narrowed gaze. Then, she planted her combat boot on his head, assuming a comfortable stance, and lit a cigarette, casually puffing away. “Damn it, do you think I’m a Hello Kitty?” Lin Hao thought, deciding that this woman wasn’t a good person. Keeping her alive could harm other survivors, giving him a reason to act. The woman, smoking her cigarette, reflected on her transformation. After a brutal military experiment, she emerged with enhanced abilities, though it meant losing her freedom. As she enjoyed her smoke, she didn’t notice Lin Hao’s eyes narrowing. Suddenly, he grabbed her neck, revealing his sharp teeth. “Zombie! You’re a zombie?” the woman exclaimed, reaching for her helmet’s radio. Lin Hao kicked it away, then commanded, “Scan.” Nothing happened. “Scan only works on pure T-virus organisms,” Goudan finally spoke. Lin Hao blushed, realizing his mistake. The woman, desperate, repeatedly jabbed him with her tranquilizer gun. Seeing her reach for her rifle, Lin Hao knocked her out with a punch. He handcuffed her hands behind her back and tied her legs, then tossed her into the trunk. He got back into the driver’s seat and started the car again. The radio continued its broadcast. Lin Hao recalled that B City, a city near the mountains, would be a safer place for his sister. After half an hour, he returned to the school’s entrance. The trunk thumped as the woman regained consciousness. With a smirk, Lin Hao got out and opened the trunk.
