8. All I Want for Christmas

ASHELENE Rhett finally groaned from the bedroom before we heard the footsteps. "Jesus, Knox,” he muttered, voice thick with sleep. “You sound like you woke up in a crime scene.” Knox spun around, coffee cup clutched tight in his massive hand. “You know..." he trailed off, his eyes flickering to mine. "This feels like a crime scene." I chukled. His lips twitched as he looked at me... a little longer. Rhett blinked at him slowly. “…Where’s the blood?” “My dignity is bleeding!” I snorte, trying and failing not to wheeze. Rhett stretched like a smug cat, muscles rippling, then flashed me a small smile. He was only wearing his pants, and looked comfortable without his shirt. I appreciated how gorgeous he looked... in the sunlight. “You’re fine. It's not you,” he said, standing up with a long, rolling stretch. “You’re human again. You had s*x. You’re welcome.” Knox choked on actual air. "I did not—he had s*x! The wolf! Neon! Not me! I didn’t— I wasn’t— I didn’t consent to waking up naked with a stranger and my f*****g twin." He gestured at Rhett like the very sight offended him. Rhett raised a brow. "Didn't you tell Neon to do whatever the f**k he wanted... This is what you get for hiding whenever..." He trailed off when Knox glared at him. "Shut the f**k up," Knox said. He looked like he might throw the espresso machine at him. “Hey," Rhett said softly. "I'm sorry. This just happened. Neon said you were okay with it." "I was okay with... what he asked for, but this... is weird." Knox looked at the floor, rubbing the back of his neck. “Hey,” Rhett repeated, nudging his ankle with his foot. “Look at me.” Knox didn’t. Rhett nudged harder. Finally, Knox looked up. Rhett’s voice softened… though his mouth still quirked in amusement. "The problem is... that Neon and I had s*x with her, right?" he asked, and Knox nodded. "You have to admit it was strange... but then, usually..." "I know. Neon would be back in your room when you wake up, and you won't know.... what happened. Today you woke up here, and you were confused. I understand, but it is like any other day." "It is not..." Knox said, his eyes shifting to mine, slightly narrowed. I had a feeling he wanted to say something, but didn't... "You saw me naked..." Rhett shrugged. “I’ve seen you naked a hundred times.” “You f*****g i***t. That did not help at all." Rhett chuckled, throwing a boxer at him. Knox yelped. "What the hell..." "Wear that. You are still naked..." "I'm going to murder you in your sleep..." “Look at you,” Rhett teased. “Blushing like you just discovered porn.” Knox frowned. I choked, biting back the laughter, knowing very well Knox wouldn't appreciate it. "I don't watch porn," Knox said, his nose upturned. “It is okay," I said with a smile. "You’re cute when you panic naked.” Knox shook his head before emptying the second cup of coffee as Rhett walked next to me, pushing me closer to him like it was... all so normal. He was not the man he was last night. Now I realized... he was trying to protect Knox from this, because he might have known how Knox would react to what Neon did. Their dynamic was strange, but I understood how it must be for them. They were twins, and their bond was powerful. It was unlike anything in the world. "Now where is my kiss?" Rhett whispered, leaning closer, his finger curving into my ass. Knox stared at us in horror, like he couldn't believe what he was seeing. I leaned in, placing a quick kiss on his lips, my eyes wide on Knox. His cheeks flushed and he gulped hard, Adam's apple bobbing up and down. His tongue darted forward, licking his upper lip when I pulled away. "Now, let's go back to bed," Rhett said with a groan. “You’re going back to bed?" Knox asked, hands thrown up, looking disgruntled. Rhett smirked. “Yeah. I had a long night.” Knox blinked. "You had a long night? And whose fault was that? Let's get the hell out and go now..." Knox said, looking at his brother. "Come on. We need to leave... soon." "Yes, but I agreed to show Ash Paris during Christmas. We will leave in two days, like we planned. I just want to spend the two days with her..." "What the f**k are you-- you hate Christmas..." Knox sighed, when Rhett shrugged. "I can't deal with all of this naked," he mumbled, walking back into the room. He slammed the door in frustration, but we heard him muttering as he got dressed: “Ridiculous… stupid wolf… embarrassing disaster…” When he emerged, he looked almost put-together—dark hair still slightly damp, shirt slightly crooked, but at least he was wearing pants and shirt now. Rhett ordered room service while Knox was gone, after he heard my stomach growling—a full French breakfast spread because Rhett insisted Christmas required carbs. The table filled quickly when the food finally arrived. My mouth watered as I looked at the beautiful plates filled with croissants, quiches, roasted potatoes, chocolate pastries, fruit compotes, freshly squeezed juices. “Merry Christmas,” Rhett said, handing me a cup of hot chocolate with an obnoxiously sweet grin. I smiled back. “Yeah. Merry Christmas.” Knox hesitated before sitting next to his brother when he motioned to him, then nodded at me like he wasn’t entirely sure how to behave on holidays with near-strangers. “Merry Christmas,” he muttered before biting aggressively into a croissant like it had wronged him. “Thank you,” I said warmly. He froze for a second, like he didn’t know how to take kindness, and then looked away quickly, cheeks faint pink. “So…” I asked lightly, “did Neon come back yet?” Knox’s frown deepened. “He is there, alright. Just pretending to be… not there. That bastard.” Rhett snorted. “He’s sulking somewhere in your brain, isn’t he?” Knox rolled his eyes. “Probably.” “If you don’t want to be here,” I said gently, “you can let him come out. Just for today.” “No,” Knox said immediately. Too fast, too quick. Like he wanted to be here... instead of Neon?! Both Rhett and I stared at him. Rhett raised a brow. “You didn’t even think about it.” “I did think about it,” Knox snapped. “And the answer is no.” “Why?” I asked softly. Knox’s jaw worked, eyes darting away. “Because if he jumps out now, he’ll just—get himself into more trouble.” “That’s not the real reason,” Rhett said, folding his arms. Knox glared at him. “Shut up.” Rhett only smirked. “You’re scared he’ll take over and you’ll miss things with Ash? Again?” Knox flushed violently. “I—NO—I—no one is doing anything with... her..." He pointed me like I offended him. "Again. You too." “Not happening,” Rhett said. “I'm going to f**k her again and again..." He said looking at me, his eyes heated. "You can come watch if you want..." My breath caught. Knox went utterly still, croissant halfway to his mouth. “That’s not— I didn’t—” He swallowed hard. “I don't want to watch.” "You can join us, then." "No." He looked uncertain, though. I offered a small smile. His throat bobbed. He didn’t speak. Rhett nudged him with his knee. “Also you’re nicer. Neon is not...” “I am not nicer—” Knox said. “You’re cuter,” I added. Knox made a tiny squeaking noise. Rhett choked on his pastry. "f**k you, Rhett... and you..." he trailed off, shaking his head. Knox grabbed a pastry and threw it at him, and he laughed, finally, finally relaxing a little. As breakfast wound down… Something quiet settled between the three of us—a strange, unexpected peace. Knox picked a chocolate from a pain au chocolat and set it on the side of my plate without comment. Rhett leaned back, watching us both like he already knew things I hadn’t dared think yet. It was cozy and warm. And so, achingly, dangerously easy to fall into. For a moment, I let myself imagine staying here... with them. More than a few days. A few months... "Dangerous," Mei whispered, finally coming out after watching it all simply. "This is a detour." "I know," I whispered. Eventually, I’d go back to New York. To Nightshade. This wasn't real. This wasn't my life. This was only temporary. Yet when Knox looked at me with those startled-soft eyes, and Rhett stretched, grinning like trouble wrapped in sunshine— I wondered if maybe… just maybe… NO. f**k no. That is impossible. That is just all this warm nostalgia talking...
