Adrian's eyes burned with a light that wasn't human.
I sat across from him in the small apartment, the network pulsing in the back of my mind. His presence was different from anyone I'd ever met—a strange, flickering energy that seemed to exist outside the normal flow of consciousness.
"You've been waiting for me," I said. "Why?"
Adrian leaned forward, his hands trembling. "Because I've seen what's coming, James. I've seen the future. And it's worse than anything you can imagine."
"What have you seen?"
He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were filled with a terrible knowledge. "A war. Not like the ones we've fought before. This one will consume everything—the network, the city, the people. Everything will be destroyed."
"Who's going to start this war?"
