Emily's POV
I felt so relieved and thankful the moment I sat down in his office. He had come to my aid once again, and I couldn't thank him enough. I thought, the moment that cruel girl had asked the security to throw me out, that it was over. But seeing him come to my rescue dissipated every single doubt I had. And the most satisfying part of it was seeing Steven being thrown out of the building. I bet nemesis was just starting to catch up on him. I hoped that he would face more of the same in the future.
He walked to the other side of the table and sat before he took out the paperwork that had already been drafted, not looking up at me. I decided that this was the moment to tell him how grateful I was.
"Hey," I began with a soft voice but I was earnest. "I want to thank you for helping me back there. I don't know what I could have done if you weren't there." I sighed, remembering what I'd experience. He raised his head and looked in my direction.
He beamed. A rare sight.
"Emily, it's not trouble at all. I'm just glad I could be there to help." I took a deep breath, trying to get myself together.
Knowing that the compensation for being close to him wasn't going to be enough, and I wouldn't be able to make the rest of the money within the few days I had, I decided to tell him about my father's situation and I didn't mind having to do extra work as long as he could help me with it. I was all nervous.
"There's something I need to tell you." I said, looking away. When I glanced back at him, he looked so serious.
"What is it?" He asked with a very dark tone. I swallowed before letting out the information. "It's about my father. He was diagnosed with cancer a few days ago." My voice was now trembling as I remembered what the doctor had said to me about his chances of survival and how much it would cost. I couldn't even think of what would happen if I didn't do anything. I continued with a shaky voice.
"He's very sick and the doctors said he needs intensive treatment. It's really expensive and I used all my savings to get him a few days in the hospital, but it's not enough. The amount they want is a hundred and fifty thousand." He nodded, seemingly indifferent about the price, but he didn't interrupt me. I continued, "I've been trying to save as much as I can, but it's never going to be enough no matter how hard I work. That's why I was hesitant about signing the contract. I didn't know if I could manage everything." He dropped the pen he was holding and nodded with a thoughtful look on his face.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your father. That must be incredibly difficult for you."
"It is," I admitted as the tears began to fill my eyes again. "I don't know what else to do. I'm willing to work as hard you want, to give up any additional compensation if you can please help me. My father means everything to me and I don't want anything to happen to him. Please help me."
He leaned back on his chair and seemed to consider my words for some time. After a moment, he spoke.
"Emily, you don't have to forgo any compensation. Your hard work deserves to be rewarded and it will be rewarded. Remember you asked for help. The thing is, I can help with the funds for your father's treatment." I felt the blood beat in my brain, but for a good reason this time. I also noted the way my heart beat faster as I considered his words. Was he really going to do that? Was this happening that fast?!
"Really?" I asked as my heart leaped in my chest again and again. "Really? Y-you would do that for me?"
"Yes," he said, nodding firmly. "I'll cover the cost of his treatment. Your focus should be on your work and taking care of your father, not worrying about money." I couldn't believe that he was insinuating that nothing would be withdrawn from my wages.
He was going to give the money to the hospital without me compensating for it! I was speechless for a while before I finally found the voice to speak. The tears were now streaming down my face in a torrent.
"Thank you. I don't know how I can ever repay you."
I closed my eyes with both hands, still reminiscing about what I was experiencing right now.
"There is no need for repayment." He said gently."Just keep doing your best here and take care of your father. That's all I ask. Please stop crying. You should be happy, not in tears."
I nodded and started to wipe away the tears. I'd never felt this hopeful in a very long time. "I promise I will. Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me."
He smiled again before his hand glided across the table towards me to squeeze mine in a reassuring gesture. I couldn't believe he was helping me yet again, in a way I never expected.
"I'm glad I can help, Emily. We don't have all day, so let's make sure everything is in order with the contract. I have some meetings at noon and I have to go through some of my papers."
I cleaned up the rest of the tears, still sniffing, before I reached for the paperwork which he handed over to me together with a pen. After we finished with the contract, he asked me to tell him more about my father and our situation. He looked genuinely interested and concerned, so I decided to open up and tell him everything.
I told him about how my father had worked so hard all his life and how he had sacrificed so much for me, how seeing him so sick and in pain was the hardest thing I've ever faced. I told him about all my efforts to get everything sorted out but it wasn't just working. He consoled me and told me everything would be fine.
At the end of my meeting with him, I knew he was the man I'd met at the restroom. Things had only happened because of circumstances. He was a lot better than that and I didn't blame myself because it took me this long to understand.
