Emily's POV
I put the phone to my ear, listening as it continued to ring. It rang for the third time without anybody picking it up, and I groaned inwardly, wondering what was wrong. Was he aware that I was calling and was choosing to ignore, or was it the other way? I knew I wouldn't be making this call if it weren't for my father's predicament. The bills kept piling up, and we had no other options left. I knew that it would get even worse if I didn't do anything. I had to make this happen. Thankfully, he answered after a few more rings.
"Hello, this is Berton." He said from the other end.
"Hi, it's Emily." I said, trying to keep my voice steady. I didn't know how I was going to bring it up to him that I had had a change of mind. I felt embarrassed about it, even though I knew I would end up letting him know about it very soon. I was still deep in my thoughts when I heard his voice.
"Why are you calling?" He asked, sounding a bit hard.
"I umm… decided to call you because of the confidentiality agreement that you proposed to me." There was a brief pause on the other end before he replied.
"Yeah, you rejected it." He said, sounding a bit disappointed. My heart skipped a bit as a tiny shiver ran through me. I didn't know what to expect from this, but I just had to shoot my shot and see where it would take me.
"Yeah… I've decided to sign the contract." I announced before closing my eyes and clenching my jaw, wondering if he was going to ask me to f**k off and never call his number again.
The pause on the other end was getting longer now, and the silence was almost deafening. My stomach made a very uncomfortable sound as I continued to wait, hoping he would say something. He finally did.
"Are you sure about this, Emily?" He asked, before another pause followed.
"Yes," I replied firmly before taking a deep breath to steady my frayed nerves. Was that a yes? I wondered, still worried.
"If that's your decision, then let's meet tomorrow at Terra so we can finalize the agreement. I will make the arrangements, so see you tomorrow at 10 AM," He sounded so calm and reassuring.
"Thank you," I felt so joyful as soon as I hung up the phone, but I reminded myself that this was not the time to celebrate. My father was in a grave condition and until he was back on his feet and the cancer had been cured, there was nothing to bring me happiness or joy.
I took a deep breath before making my way out again. I couldn't believe I was going to do this, but the fact that he had given me a chance meant that he wasn't a bad person after all. I hoped that agreement wouldn't go beyond what it was intended to be. Well, it was our duty to make sure of that, and I would be strict about it.
The next day, I arrived at Terra as planned. My heart was pounding as I walked into the towering structure of glass and steel. As I waited in the lobby, I spotted someone. I c****d my head to the side to make sure that it was him and after a closer look, I knew that he was the one. It was Steven! I couldn't believe he was here.
What was he doing here? I wondered before he started walking towards one of the offices. My curiosity got the better of me because I immediately followed to know why he was here. I waited until he had entered the office before I got closer to get a look.
When I peeked inside, I saw him beside a lady, and to my shock, their hands were intertwined. He was fawning over the lady who had a sycophantic smile on her face. The look on his face was so ingratiating that it made me sick. They were even wearing matching outfits as they were both in suits.
I couldn't believe this was the man I once dreamed of spending my life with. It hurt me so much that he had dismissed me like an old, used rag. I had no idea if I was ever going to forgive him ever again. I couldn't hold back any longer as I stepped into the office with my voice shaking with anger. "Steven!" I turned around and when he saw me, he was shocked at first, but then his expression shifted to something of mocking amusement. He exchanged glances with the girl before he asked.
"Emily? How did you manage to get in here?"
I glared so hard and steadily at him. "What are you doing here, fawning over a woman like a lapdog?"
The amused look on his face suddenly vanished, and this time it was replaced by a cold sneer. "And how does it matter to you? This is the largest company in the Pack and a thing of your status shouldn’t allow you access here."
I felt a cold fury building inside me. "You cheated on me, Steven. You promised me a future, and then you threw it all away for… what? A life of comfort with someone who could offer you more?" His laugh was a harsh, bitter sound. "Well, the Gamma I'm with now can offer me a better life than you ever could. A life with you would have been nothing but hardship. You don't have the connections to get me a job here." Before I could respond, the Gamma lady shot me an angry look. Her face was filled with so much disdain.
"What's going on here?" She asked, as her eyes fell on me. They were filled with unwavering disgust.
Steven pointed at me. There was still a mocking tone in his voice. "This is Emily and I don't think she belongs here."
Her eyes narrowed as she looked at me. "Get her out of here," she ordered coldly. "Security!"
My heart skipped a beat when I saw two security officers moving towards me.
That was the moment Berton appeared. "What is going on here?"
