David didn’t sleep again.
He played the voicemail 7 times.
_"Don't go to Ikeja."_
His voice. But not him.
Who had a recording of him? And why send it now?
By 5pm he was outside the café with blue chairs. His legs felt like jelly.
What if it was a trap? What if "he" showed up?
Then he saw her.
Ada.
Jeans, white shirt, hair in a low ponytail. She looked nervous too. Kept checking over her shoulder.
David waved. She walked over fast and sat down.
_"You came,"_ she said.
_"You almost didn't,"_ he replied. _"Did you get the voicemail too?"_
Ada nodded and played it on her phone. Same voice. Same words.
They looked at each other.
_"This is insane,"_ Ada whispered. _"Who is doing this?"_
The waiter came. They both ordered water. Neither touched it.
David leaned forward. _"We need to trace these calls. Go to the police?"_
_"And say what? That we got wrong numbers and creepy voicemails?"_ Ada shook her head. _"They'll laugh."_
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.
She showed David the screen. He nodded. Answer it.
Ada put it on speaker.
_"Hello?"_
Static. Then breathing. Then a voice.
Low. Male. Not David’s.
_"I told you not to go to Ikeja."_
The call dropped.
Before either could speak, the café door opened.
A man walked in. Tall. Black cap. Sunglasses inside.
He looked straight at their table.
And smiled.
_"David? Ada?"_ he said. _"Mind if I join you?"_
David and Ada froze.
