David pressed call without looking.
He was in a rush. Meeting in 10 minutes. Board waiting.
His assistant was supposed to send the report.
"Hello? Customer service?" a woman's voice answered, confused.
David frowned. "This is David Carter. Is the report ready?"
A pause. "Sir... I think you have the wrong number."
David looked at his phone. He had.
But something about her voice made him stay on the line.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Ada," she said carefully. "And you’re definitely not my boss."
David almost smiled. "Good. I’m tired of bosses today."
There was silence on the other end. Then a soft laugh.
"You sound stressed," Ada said.
"I am," David admitted. "Long day. You?"
"Just started my shift at the call center," Ada replied. "First call of the day, and it's a CEO who dialed wrong."
David leaned back in his leather chair and smiled for the first time that morning. "CEO. You caught me."
"Well, CEO," Ada teased, "what can I do for you?"
For the first time all week, David didn’t want to hang up.
