David didn’t think. He just ran.
The whistle. Tunde’s voice. It was his only chance.
Behind him, shouting. _"Get him!"_
He bolted through the open back gate into the dark street. His chest burned.
Footsteps behind him. Heavy. Fast.
_"David! This way!"_
Tunde was waving from an alley, with Ada and two police officers. Real police this time.
David ducked into the alley. One of the officers grabbed his arm.
_"Are you okay?"_ the officer asked.
_"They have a girl inside,"_ David panted. _"Warehouse. Back room. Tied up."_
The officers didn’t wait. They ran toward the warehouse with their guns drawn.
Tunde and Ada stayed with David, hiding behind a dumpster.
Gunshots. One. Two.
Then silence.
1 minute felt like 1 hour.
Then the warehouse door opened.
The officers came out. With them... Chika.
She was crying. Her hands were free. One officer had a jacket over her shoulders.
Tunde broke down and ran to her. _"Chika! Chika!"_
They hugged and cried right there on the dirty street.
The man in the black cap was in handcuffs. The other two men too.
One officer walked to David. _"You’re the one they were calling?"_
David nodded.
_"Good job,"_ the officer said. _"We’ve been tracking that number for months. Your call history helped us find them."_
David looked at Ada. She was smiling, tears in her eyes.
It was over.
Or at least... he thought it was.
Because as they drove away in the police van, David’s phone buzzed one last time.
Unknown number.
_This isn’t over._
