The first time Lin Ye used his new power in a real fight, it was like a switch had been flipped inside him.
He was walking through the wreckage of what used to be a shopping mall, his machete in hand, when the zombies came for him. At first, it was just a few shambling figures in the distance, but as he moved deeper into the ruins, more appeared—drawn by the scent of life.
Lin Ye didn’t hesitate. He knew what had to be done. His heart didn’t race, his palms didn’t sweat. He had no fear.
The system’s Enhanced Reflexes kicked in almost immediately. As the first zombie lunged at him, he sidestepped, his blade flashing through the air in a precise arc. The creature’s head dropped to the floor, its lifeless body crumpling to the ground.
Ding!
【You have killed a zombie. Strength +1, Agility +1.】
Without missing a beat, Lin Ye moved forward. The zombies were slow, lumbering, their movements predictable. But Lin Ye was faster now, his strikes more powerful, his reflexes honed to a razor's edge. Each swing of his machete was deadly, each movement smooth and efficient.
Swoosh! Swoosh!
The zombies fell in droves, their bodies hitting the floor with sickening thuds. And with every kill, Lin Ye felt the power growing within him. His muscles swelled with strength, his agility increased.
Ding!
【You have killed another zombie. Constitution +1!】
The system rewarded him with each kill, and with each reward, he grew stronger. The more zombies he cut down, the more his body changed. He was evolving with every moment.
But the fight wasn’t over.
As he cleared the last of the zombies, Lin Ye’s senses flared. Something wasn’t right. There was a presence in the shadows—a larger, more dangerous creature watching him.
He turned just in time to see a massive, mutated zombie charge at him. It was bigger than the others, with bulging muscles and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Its eyes were bloodshot, and it moved with a speed that belied its size.
Lin Ye didn’t hesitate. He knew that if he hesitated, he would die.
With a flash of movement, he ducked under the zombie’s swipe, his machete slicing upward. The blade cleaved through the zombie’s arm, severing it at the shoulder. The creature let out a howl of pain, but it didn’t stop.
Lin Ye felt his muscles twitch, his reflexes sharpening as his Enhanced Reflexes kicked in again. He sidestepped the zombie’s next attack, his blade cutting through its throat with a single, powerful strike. The monster dropped to the floor, its body twitching for a few seconds before going still.
Ding!
【You have killed a mutated zombie. Strength +3, Agility +3, Constitution +2.】
Lin Ye stood over the fallen creature, panting slightly but feeling a surge of power flood through him. He glanced down at his machete, then wiped the blood off on the ground. This was what he was meant for—this was his power.
The system flashed again, and Lin Ye’s mind focused on the notification that appeared before him:
“Sign-In Available.”
He didn’t hesitate this time. He accepted the reward without a second thought.
Ding!
【Sign-In Complete. Reward: Special Skill: Combat Mastery (Novice).】
Lin Ye smirked. The system was becoming more and more useful, but he knew this was just the beginning. With each kill, with each sign-in, he would grow stronger, unstoppable. He would use this power to carve a path through the apocalypse and come out on top.
