Watching the sparrow soar overhead like an eagle, I fell silent. The longer I stayed in this forest, the more I realized how difficult it would be to survive here on my own. Vincent noticed my silence and leaned in, brushing his cheek against mine. “What's wrong? Scared?” he asked softly. “Don't worry, I'm here. I told you, I'd die for you if I had to.” There he went again, saying crazy things. I instinctively leaned away from him, trying to put some distance between us—but the tree trunk was only so wide. Vincent caught my attempt to avoid him, and a glimmer of amusement flashed through his eyes. He opened his mouth, probably to tease me some more, when suddenly a series of wolf howls rang out from the distance—painful, anguished howls. Vincent's expression immediately turned serious.
