Lily walked into the house and closed the door. She hoped that no one would be there, but unfortunately, they were waiting for her. She took her shoes off and tried to walk to her small room without them noticing. When she started to get closer to her room, someone put their hand on her shoulder.
“Where do you think you are going? Didn't I tell you to come home on time? Did the teacher keep you after school?“ From her voice, Lily knew that it was her—her mother.
“I'm going to my room to do homework. I was held up by a newbie in our school. He asked me to show him around, and I did that.“ Lily turned to look at her.
“Don't lie to me, you pig. Look at yourself. No one would ever want to talk to you. How could he even say a word to you?“ She looked at Lily with a crazy look.
“Can't I talk to people? Maybe I'm tired of being alone. Did you really expect me to be alone for all my life just to serve this family?“ Lily said in an angry voice.
“You are a spoiled brat,“ she slapped Lily very hard. “You are not grateful for what you have. Do you imagine how much we do for you?“
Lily rubs her cheek.
“And what did you do for me? Made me your servant. You and Dad always give her things to do.” Lily pointed at her sister, who was smiling, enjoying hearing what was happening. “For her, you say nothing. If she makes a mistake, I always have to fix it. That's not fair. I am not your, her, or Dad's servant. I don't have to do anything. It's enough. I'm tired of all that shit.“ Lily tried to open her room door. But her mom was faster; she closed the door before it was even opened.
“If you don't get food for a week, you will change your mind, and you will beg for my forgiveness.“ She slapped her again. “Now go into your room and think about what you have done.“
Lily didn't say anything; she walked into her room and sat on the bed. Lily started to cry, thinking about why she was always the one to suffer. Why her?
Lily cried her tears out, then she stood up, walked to the mirror, and looked at herself. She saw her eyes all red from crying and her cheeks with marks where her mom had slapped her. She rubbed her cheek softly, but it hurt to touch it.
Lily walked to her desk and sat in the chair, thinking. Maybe one day she would be happy. She still didn’t understand why her new classmate, Sebastian, told her that silly story. Maybe he said that just to make her smile? Maybe he just made fun of her? Lily didn't know the answer to those questions but tried to answer them. She was still thinking about them. It was better to think than feel the pain.
After some time, she took her nightclothes, went to change into them, then went to bed. In bed, she still thought of what had happened today and what would happen tomorrow. Before she fell asleep, the last question in her mind was: Is it really true what Sebastian said to her?
