1 June 1692, Wednesday Yesterday Father was at the end of his rope after he learned what has been going on along the coast. He could not contain his wrath for those involved. “Who knew French privateers could wreak such havoc!” He did not intend his tone for me, I knew, so I continued to work the maths, listening to him rant whilst I did my best to balance the ledger. The numbers came out correctly a third of the time, incorrectly a third of the time, and I had no idea, right or wrong, the rest of the time. At least, I thought, we have not yet gone bankrupt. “Those Frenchmen captured a coasting vessel and two fishing shallops!” “What has been done about it?” I asked. “They say the Council has ordered the William and Mary to be refitted to return to active duty alongside the Nonsuch.”
