Chapter Four: The First Secret

1530 Words
By the following Wednesday, the six students had discovered something important about their project. It was much easier to divide the work than to actually work together. They had each taken their assigned topics seriously. Ethan had filled several pages with statistics about academic performance. Julia had collected information about school policies and extracurricular opportunities. Marcus had interviewed students about meals, sleep, and how those things affected their ability to concentrate. Emily had gathered notes about friendships, encouragement, and social support. Jason had researched athletics, discipline, and extracurricular activities. And Maya had spent two evenings speaking with students about family support and financial circumstances. She had expected the work to be interesting. She hadn't expected it to make her think so much about the people around her. At lunch, Maya sat with Emily, waiting for the others. Emily dropped into the seat beside her. "You're early." "So are you." "I've been early twice this week. Don't get used to it." Maya smiled. Across the cafeteria, Lexi was surrounded by Brooke and several other students from their usual circle. She was halfway through a conversation when she noticed Emily. Her eyes moved from Emily to Maya, then to the rest of the table. Her expression changed. She excused herself from her friends and walked straight toward them. Emily noticed her coming. "Here we go," she murmured. Maya looked up. "Is everything okay?" "Probably not." Lexi stopped beside their table. "Emily." Emily looked at her. "Hey." "Can I talk to you?" Emily glanced at the others. "Sure." "Over there." Lexi pointed toward their usual table. Emily sighed. "Lexi, I'm eating lunch." "So am I." "Then what is this about?" Lexi folded her arms. "You know exactly what this is about." Emily frowned. "I really don't." Lexi looked around the table. "You're sitting here." Emily looked at her chair. "Yes." "With them." Jason raised an eyebrow but stayed quiet. Marcus slowly lowered the sandwich in his hand. Julia exchanged a look with Ethan. Maya remained silent. Lexi leaned closer to Emily. "You've been sitting with these people all week." "They're my project group." "That's not what I'm talking about." "Then what are you talking about?" Lexi lowered her voice. "Our table. Our group. Our place in this school." Emily stared at her. "Lexi, it's lunch." "It's not just lunch." Lexi glanced toward Maya. "Everyone notices who sits with whom." Maya's expression remained calm, but Emily's face tightened. "So?" "So you're making us look different." Emily blinked. "Different?" "You know what I mean." "No, actually, I don't." Lexi sighed impatiently. "You are one of us, Emily. You're a cheerleader. You're popular. You have a reputation here. You can't just start sitting with random people every day." Marcus looked down at his sandwich. "Random people?" Julia gave him a warning look. He shrugged. Emily pushed her chair back slightly. "They aren't random people. They're my classmates." "They're lowering your status." The words landed heavily. Emily stared at her. "My status?" "Yes." "You actually think sitting with my project group lowers my status?" Lexi looked frustrated. "You don't understand how people see things." "No. I understand exactly how people see things. I just don't think I have to live my life according to it." Lexi shook her head. "You're spending too much time with them." "I have to." "No, you don't." "Yes, I do. We have an assignment worth a huge part of our grade, and we're supposed to work together." "You can work with them after school." "We already do." "Then do it after school." Emily's voice became firmer. "Lexi, I'm not going to stop sitting with them because you think it makes us look less important." Several students nearby had started watching. Maya noticed. She gently touched Emily's arm. "Maybe we should just—" Lexi turned toward her. "This doesn't concern you." Maya pulled her hand back. "I wasn't trying to interfere." "Then don't." Emily stood. "Lexi, don't talk to her like that." "I'm talking to you." "Then talk to me." Lexi stepped closer. "I am trying to help you." "By telling me who I'm allowed to sit with?" "By reminding you who your friends are." Emily's face hardened. "My friends don't decide who I'm allowed to be friends with." For a moment, neither girl spoke. Then Lexi reached down, picked up the small carton of food sitting beside her, and threw it. It hit Maya across the front of her shirt. The cafeteria went silent. Maya froze. A streak of sauce ran down her uniform. Marcus stood immediately. "Lexi!" Emily stared in disbelief. "What is wrong with you?" Lexi seemed shocked by what she had done herself, but her embarrassment quickly turned into anger. "She shouldn't have gotten involved." Maya wiped at her shirt. "Emily was talking to you. I wasn't trying to—" "Then stay out of it!" Emily stepped between them. "Don't you dare." Lexi shoved Emily's shoulder. Emily stumbled backward. Then she shoved Lexi back. The cafeteria erupted. Someone screamed. Chairs scraped across the floor. Lexi grabbed Emily's arm. Emily pulled away. "Stop!" "Don't tell me what to do!" "You started this!" "You chose them over me!" "I didn't choose anyone!" Lexi reached for her again. Emily pushed her away. Maya stepped forward. "Emily, stop. Just leave it." Lexi turned toward Maya again. "You ruined everything!" Maya stared at her. "I didn't do anything to you." "Exactly!" Before Maya could respond, Lexi grabbed the front of her shirt. Maya instinctively pushed her hands away. Emily immediately stepped between them. "Get away from her!" Lexi shoved Emily. Emily shoved back. A teacher finally rushed over. "ENOUGH!" Another teacher hurried across the cafeteria. "Emily! Lexi! Step away from each other!" Both girls froze. The room had gone completely silent. Maya stood behind Emily, still covered in food. Jason was already beside her. "Are you okay?" Maya nodded. "I'm fine." He looked at the stain on her shirt. "You sure?" "Yes." His jaw tightened as he glanced toward Lexi. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to. --- Ten minutes later, Emily and Lexi sat outside the principal's office. Maya sat beside Emily. Jason, Ethan, Julia, and Marcus stood nearby. The principal, Dr. Harris, finally opened the door. "Emily Carter. Lexi Carter. Come in." The two girls entered. Maya watched Emily disappear through the door. She could see how shaken her friend was. Jason stood beside her. "You didn't deserve that." Maya looked down at her stained shirt. "No." Then she gave a small sigh. "But I don't think fighting helped either." Jason looked at her. "You're still defending her?" "I'm not defending what she did." "Then what are you doing?" "Trying to understand what happened." Jason shook his head. "I don't think I could do that." Maya smiled faintly. "That's okay." He looked at her for a moment. There was something about her that continued to surprise him. She could have been furious. She had every reason to be. Instead, she was trying to understand the situation without pretending the behavior was acceptable. Jason admired that. More than he wanted to admit. --- Inside the office, Dr. Harris sat behind his desk. "Tell me what happened." Emily looked at Lexi. Lexi looked away. Emily spoke first. "Lexi confronted me because I was sitting with my project group." Dr. Harris looked at Lexi. "Is that correct?" Lexi nodded. "She has been ignoring our group." "I haven't been ignoring anyone," Emily said. Dr. Harris raised a hand. "One at a time." Lexi continued. "I told her that she should spend more time with our group." "And then?" Lexi hesitated. "I threw the food." Emily looked at her. "And then you grabbed Maya." "I was angry." "So was I," Emily said. Dr. Harris leaned back. "And you both fought." Neither answered. "Both of you will receive disciplinary consequences for the physical altercation. But Lexi, throwing food at another student and initiating the confrontation will also be addressed." Lexi's face fell. Emily looked down. Dr. Harris sighed. "Your project group is clearly creating tension. But you are expected to resolve personal disagreements without turning them into physical confrontations." Emily nodded. "Yes, sir." --- When Emily came out, Maya stood. "Are you okay?" Emily nodded. "I'm sorry." Maya shook her head. "You don't have to apologize for what Lexi did." "I should've walked away." "So should she." Emily gave a tired laugh. "You're surprisingly calm." Maya smiled. "I'm not calm. I'm just trying not to make today worse." Jason looked at her. There it was again. That quality he couldn't quite explain. Maya didn't need to be the loudest person in the room to be strong. Sometimes strength was simply knowing when not to add more fire. The six students walked away from the principal's office together. For the first time, they weren't just a project group. Something had happened between them. Something had tested them. And somehow, they had stayed together. But none of them knew that the cafeteria fight was only the beginning of the problems that would soon follow. Because while they were learning to stand beside one another, someone else had already begun deciding who was allowed to stand with them.
