She blinked. Then let out a slow breath. “I have to do this.”
“They get the gist of it.”
“I’m tired of all the secrets.” Cassie’s gaze roamed around the room in an intense moment of silence. Taking a deep breath, she said softly, “I had an abortion, and I didn’t tell John about it.”
The pronouncement fell over the room like a heavy sheet of ice was suddenly enshrouding them. No one seemed to even breathe. Finally Luke asked, in just as a soft a voice as she’d used, “Were you sorry?”
Cassie narrowed her eyes to John’s profile. “I was sorry it hurt him.”
John’s neck straightened as if her words had touched him with electricity.
“You didn’t tell him anything before you did it?” Luke’s jaw was clenched, as if holding in his anger.
