Maya’s pov~
A 100k! f**k! Where do we get that type of money from?
Kate can't die! , goddamn it!
She just can't! Not when we are so close to getting out of all this!
I ran out of the cab, my heart pounding out of my chest.
Where the hell do I find that type of cash? The universe put it in my face, and I messed it all up.
Wake up, Maya! Reality check: you can't pass up a wad of cash because you have a man.
Shit, what do I do now?
The elevator pinged, and I hurried out. I stumbled because I didn't see that there was already someone standing there, let out a light gasp, and fell on his back.
The scent of his strong cologne hit me like thunder. He suddenly smelled familiar, and feelings of nostalgia hit me.
Is he? The same man from that night?
“I’m sorry, I didn’t see you standing there... Im..”
He said nothing; he looked sideways, and I could see the highlights of his profile. He gave off a very haughty aura.
He walked off like I didn't matter.
My phone blew up again, bringing me back to reality. I picked it up. “I’m here! Hi, I'm here, just pulling into the corner.” I quickly dropped the call when I saw a doctor wave at me.
I turned instinctively to see where the strange man had come from: CHEMOTHERAPY.
Could he be dying? I rejected a man in his last days, an ironic twist, considering how these were about to be my last days.
“Hi, Maya?” The lady smiled, welcoming me into the room where I saw my best friend hooked up to machines, barely conscious.
“Oh my God, Kate!” I rushed to her side, her parents crying beside her, “Who the hell did this?” I cried, “I saw her this morning!” Tears ran down my face. I touched her arm and lowered my head. “Pookie, can you hear me?” She didn't stir.
My body went cold, snot running down my lips, and I wiped it away and turned back to the doctor.
“Hi Maya, I'm Doctor Sterling. Look, I'm just going to rip the band-aid off as painfully as I can. She needs a heart transplant, or she won't make it.” The doctor started. Kate's parents sighed in anguish.
“Doctor, 100k! Is a lot of money coming in? No one saw the bastard who did this?” I inquired, “Come on, doc, give me something to work with here.” I couldn't leave here without answers.
Someone has to pay for this. “All the hospital knows is that it was a red Porsche; it zoomed off before anyone could catch the plates. Maya, you need to find a way to come up with the money before Monday, or the hospital is going to take appropriate measures to ensure Kate’s comfortable,” she continued.
“Comfortable?” I asked, my voice cracking, “You know what I mean, Maya. You are just going to check Kate into hospice. The hospital doesn't want that as much as you do. Can you come up with a quarter, half the money? Then we can get something started. She’s got insurance, but there’s so much they can do,” she finished before nodding at her parents.
She offered me the last painful smile and walked out of the room.
“Oh Kate, my darling girl, I'm so sorry I failed you,” her mother cried; her father’s low growl followed, he downed another flask and roared at Kate’s mom.
“This is all your fault; I told you not to let her out of the house! No, look, she’s dead!” he roared.
“She’s not dead, Frank! We just need to find the money!” she exclaimed.
He slapped her. “Are you speaking back to me?” My hands clenched in anger.
Before he could strike her again, I jumped between them. “Mr Harlow, please, this is not the time; we have to look for the money to...”
“Money? I don't have any, and I don't care. I'm going to have myself a glass with the boys; it's her fault. She's going to figure it out!” He yelled for the last time before dragging his greasy ass out of the room.
Mrs Harlow fell to the floor, hopeless. I gathered the poor woman’s hands into mine.
“Mrs Arlow, Kate wouldn't want you to do this. Look, let's figure it out together. I won't let her die, not Kate; she's strong,” I stated.
“My poor daughter, how did I give you such a father?” She wept to herself.
I got up It was hopeless talking to her; no matter what anyone said, Mrs Harlow would always run back to him.
That's why she wanted to escape. I can't give up, Kate, not when we were so close to our freedom.
I walked to Kate’s bedside, her chest rising and falling. I smiled down at her. “I'll figure it out, I promise.”
I left the room, thankful that I had someone whom I could count on, my boyfriend Allan Davies, my childhood sweetheart and now my college boyfriend.
His parents were practically family since my father got arrested.
I hailed a cab home as he came to mind, his tall, broodish jaw, his long arms taking me into his body.
My home.
I got out and smiled at the doorman; he stepped in the way. “I didn’t know we were expecting you today, Maya,” he smiled nervously.
“What's going on, Albert? I'm here to see Allan. Anything wrong?” I asked.
“No, just that, um…”
“I don't have time for this, okay? I just want to see Allan.” I moved his arm out of the way before I walked past him.
I ignored him and focused on the elevator. I got in and tapped the 2 button.
The elevator dinged, and I entered the suite. My ears were welcomed by the ferocious attack of my boyfriend’s d**k in his nanny's pebble-waiting p***y.
“Yes, Allan! Say you want this p***y; it's all yours!” Her moans ripped through me like a sword.
“What the hell is going on, Allan!” I cried; he looked at me cold and unimpressed, “What the hell are you doing here, Maya? It's not Tuesday," he started, getting up from the bed, his d**k still hard like a rock.
My heart shattered into a million pieces.
“Finally, we can be done pretending; it's too sad to go on at this point,” he finished.
“Maya, I’m not in love with you anymore. I’m tired of keeping up with these pretences. I love Miss Pebbles, and I’m taking her home to my parents tomorrow. I know they were helping you out with some of your bills, but you are just going to have to figure it out. You are a big girl, so get your s**t and get out.”
“Your old Nanny! Really!” I exclaimed in tears.
“She’s not just a nanny; she’s more than that,” he finished, kissing her hand.
Miss Pebbles giggled and got out of bed. She walked over to where she had already packed my things and tossed me the bag.
“You heard my fiancé...” She flashed me the diamond-cut ring I'd picked out with him days ago.
I grabbed her hand in shock. “You bastard, you told me this was for your mother’s birthday; you lied to me!”
Miss Pebbles laughed before pushing me away from him.
“So pathetic, poor little Maya, get out. I can't stand you anymore. You heard him; it's over.” She hurried me into the elevator, and not once did Allen look up to see me.
“Allan, she's your nanny!”
“Not anymore, okay? Miss Pebbles and I are in love!” he retorted. “Deal with it.”
She waved at me and pushed me into the waiting elevator.
“Bye!” The door closed in my face, and my soul descended.
I burst into tears; my life is over.
All in one night, my friend, now my man, goodbye to college.
My dreams… all dashed, and now…
The elevator door pinged open, and like a zombie, I stepped out, cradling my bag like the last thing on earth I owned.
I bumped into someone again; I turned, he turned too, and our eyes met.
I stepped back in shock.
This aura, the same cologne, familiar eyes—those eyes?
I've seen them before.
“Watch where you are going. I swear if another person bumps into me again, I might just lose it.” He stood before me, huge, his palm folded into a fist.
“I’m sorry... But you are not the only one having a shitty day.”
“Excuse me?” He sounded instantly offended, but I didn't care; I'm fighting back for once.
Do you know who I am? I'm Alexander Harrington, CEO of Harrington Corp.! How dare you talk back at me!”
The sound of clicking trickled into the room, and a soft voice called my name.
“Maya Collins?" I recognised that hateful, slithering voice anywhere.
“What the hell is this trash doing here?”
She walked in front of me and held on to the Alexander. “Petra, do you know her?” he asked.
“Yes, Alex, well, not anymore. She’s a loser boyfriend snatcher from high school. How is life with Allan now?”
Her mocking tone helped me realise I've been the fool all along.
“Maya, if I had known you were a homeless person, maybe I'd have given you a room in my aunt’s leaky flat. Humiliating yourself this way is so embarrassing,” she started.
I ignored her and focused on my bag; just as I was about to pick it up, Alex switched his feet, and he stumbled, falling on top of me, and then in a split second, I tasted his lips.
Funny… he tasted like a strawberry.
