The Midnight Hour

635 Words
The financial district of Chicago was a canyon of dark glass and polished granite, completely deserted at 23:55. Rain slicked the empty streets, reflecting the harsh neon glow of the towering corporate monoliths. Marcus bypassed the main entrance of the infrastructure banking terminal, driving the SUV straight down a subterranean ramp meant for armored transport. The heavy steel security gate groan-clicked open, recognizing the encrypted transponder built into Marcus's vehicle. "Stay in the car, Elena," Marcus commanded as he shifted the truck into park. His dark eyes locked onto her in the rearview mirror, intense and unyielding. "The glass is reinforced. You are safe here." "And if you don't come back out?" Elena asked, her voice tight as she leaned forward, her fingers gripping the headrest. "The terminal automatically locks down at 00:05 if the transfer is tampered with. You’ll be trapped inside." Jace turned around from the passenger seat, checking the chamber of his weapon with a cold, efficient snap. The playful smirk was entirely gone, replaced by the lethal focus of a hunter. "Then you jump into the driver’s seat and drive like hell, counselor. But don't count us out just yet." Marcus stepped out of the vehicle, his massive silhouette cutting through the dim fluorescent lighting of the underground garage. Jace followed a step behind, his movements fluid and silent. Elena watched through the tinted windows as the two Alphas disappeared through the heavy iron service doors leading to the main terminal floor. Inside the banking suite, the air was dead silent. The only illumination came from a single glowing terminal desk at the center of the room. Standing before the monitor was a man in an immaculate, expensive suit, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard as progress bars ticked toward 100%. "You’re working late, Vance," Marcus’s deep baritone rumbled from the shadows of the entryway. Vance froze, his shoulders going entirely rigid. He didn't turn around immediately, his hand slowly sliding toward the open drawer of the desk. "Marcus. I didn't expect you back from the safehouse so soon." "Because you paid a cleanup crew to make sure he didn't," Jace sneered, stepping out from the left flank, his weapon raised and perfectly centered on Vance's chest. "Step away from the glass, corporate boy. Your clearance just got revoked." Vance slowly raised his hands, turning around with a desperate, calculating smile. "You don't understand, Marcus. The syndicate... they have resources you can't fight. I was saving the infrastructure network. If the funds didn't route through Elena's firm, they were going to raze the whole upper tier!" Marcus walked forward slowly, his heavy boots echoing like a death knell on the marble floor. He didn't look angry; he looked like an executioner. He stopped right in front of Vance, towering over him, the sheer physical dominance radiating off his frame causing Vance to visibly tremble. "You brought a war to my perimeter," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. "You leaked the coordinates of the woman who belongs to us. There is no negotiation for that." Before Vance could speak, Marcus grabbed him by the lapels of his suit and slammed him hard against the terminal desk, shattering the glass surface. At that exact moment, the digital clock on the wall blinked: 00:00. A sharp, electronic alarm began to blare, and the overhead security screens suddenly flickered, replacing the financial data with a live, high-definition camera feed of the underground garage. On the screen, three unmarked black vans swerved down the ramp, completely boxing Marcus’s SUV in. Armed mercenaries poured out, weapons raised, moving straight toward the doors where Elena was trapped. Vance let out a bloody, manic laugh against the cracked glass of the desk. "I told you, Marcus... I wasn't the only one waiting for midnight."
