“Step away from that window darling, you’ll catch a cold.” My grandmother stated, she was always so worried about me growing up; so much so my mother said I was the cause of all my grandmothers worry lines that chiseled their way in between her finely plucked eyebrows. “Yes grandma” I whispered as I shut the balcony doors. But something wasn’t right, something was calling to me from deep in the woods. It was almost like the cypress were holding a conversation with someone about me.
“Grandma, something ain’t right..I can feel it.” I said as I added more wood to the fireplace and took a seat on the floor in front of her. A chill crept up my spine making my whole body convulse. “Girl you need not to worry so much, everything is alright. What you need to be worrying your behind about is your eighteenth birthday in a few weeks and what that means to this coven.” She raised her voice slightly.
Grandma Christine was always such a firecracker but being the highest voodoo priestess in all of New Orleans you had to be. It’s a dog eat dog world out there, more like a werewolf eat witch world but we’ll get to that. “I don’t know grandma, with the werewolves getting closer and closer everyday my birthday is the last thing on my mind.” “Well it needs to be! And for that exact reason!” She yelled. “Ashlynn Christine Bell you are the future of this coven, how we survive this winter and this war ultimately lies with you.” She reached for the weathered; leather bound journal on the end table closest to her. It held all the covens history and secrets; Stories of old that were told from generation to generation. And as the almost coven leader it was my responsibility to protect it.
“We have been at war with these dogs for eons, they want what we possess and everything we are and ever will be are written on these pages.” She said as she gently stroked the cover staring off into a time beyond the room we sat in. “But I don’t know how I can protect this coven” I utter under my breath. “What is bothering you so my sweet child?” “Something just feels off I don’t know what it is, but deep in my bones I feel this intuition ..this..this change in myself.” I struggle to get my words out “Sweet heart.” She replied in a voice as sweet as honey “A witches eighteenth birthday is a time of change, you gain full access to who you are and the power you hold. So it is understandable to be scared or nervous.” She grabbed my chin and tilted my head so I had no choice but to hold her gaze. Those eyes have seen the worst of the worse but when she looked at me all she saw was her grand baby with wild curls Carmel complexion and hazel eyes. “I’m sorry you feel so much pressure baby girl, but it is in your blood to run this coven you are a Bell and we Bells are the most powerful witches of all time.” She said with such pride in her voice and such love in her eyes.
“You make it sound so easy.” I sighed she got up from her chair using her ebony cane to support her and made her way across the room and sat on the corner of my bed. She looked so tiny sitting on my massive oak sleigh bed; it was as if she would disappear if she laid on it. She patted the comforter next to her “Come to bed darling and let’s put this troubled thoughts to rest for tonight” I slowly got to my feet and dragged my self to my bed. She tucked me in tight like she always did growing up and bent down to kiss me as a silver curl escaped her bun and swept across my face. I giggled “I love you grandma” “I love you more sweetheart.” “Now close your eyes and dream a happy dream, where your worries melt like the snow and your thoughts slow for the night.” My eyes became heavy as the sleeping spell took hold of my anxieties and my muscles began to relax inch by inch. “To heal the body, to heal the mind.” She continued “until it’s time for the day to begin a new.” By the time she whispered the last words of the spell I was sound asleep.
I woke suddenly I don’t know how long I slept, but the cold that set in my bedroom was enough to freeze me to the bone. I glanced to the fireplace nothing but ash sat in it, then I looked to the open balcony door. The moon was the only source of light in my room, I grabbed my robe and swung my legs off the side of my bed. “Ash you’re a witch you can’t be afraid of the dark.” I whispered “It’s just the wind.” Trying to give myself confidence and failing horribly I jump off my bed and make my way over to the balcony. As I place my hand on the door knob two large hands reach from the dark and grab me one on my mouth the other at my throat. “You so much as scream and you’re done.” A deep husky voice came from the shadow. I couldn’t speak let alone breath so I just shook my head in response. Then two amber eyes appeared, as he stepped forward his massive figure slowly came into view, it was as if the darkness clung to him refusing to let go. My eyes almost but popped out my head the alpha of the lunar pack was in my room, and he was p***ed.
