The Last Shard

Chapter 9: The Last Shard Back in the Eldwood, the Guardian of Thrae awaited him. “You have done well, Calen Stormwright,” they said, their voice solemn. “But the final shard is hidden in the most dangerous of realms—Umbryn.” Umbryn—the land of darkness, where light had never touched. Even its name filled Calen with dread. But he had no choice. He had to retrieve the last shard, no matter what awaited him there. The Guardian opened the final portal, and Calen stepped into the darkness. Chapter 10: The Binding Umbryn was a world of utter blackness. The air was thick and oppressive, filled with a strange, heavy silence. Calen could barely see his hand in front of his face, and every step he took felt as though the darkness itself was pressing against him, trying to swallow him whole. But he pressed on, following the faint tug of the shards he carried. They were leading him to the final piece of the Celestial Key. In the distance, a faint glimmer of light appeared—a single point of brightness in the endless dark. Calen moved toward it, his heart pounding in his chest. As he drew closer, the light revealed itself to be a small, glowing crystal, suspended in mid-air. The final shard. But just as Calen reached for it, the darkness around him began to move. Shapes formed in the shadows—twisted, monstrous creatures made of pure shadow, their eyes glowing with malevolent hunger. The Veilspawn had found him. Calen’s pulse quickened as the creatures closed in, but there was no time to flee. Summoning the power of the shards, he raised them high, and a brilliant light erupted from them, banishing the shadows. The final shard floated toward him, merging with the others in a blinding flash. The Celestial Key was whole once more. But as the light faded, Calen felt a deep, ominous presence stirring in the darkness. The Ashen King’s warning echoed in his mind: “The Key will demand a price.” The Key pulsed in his hand, its power overwhelming, threatening to consume him. He could feel the weight of countless worlds pressing down on him, the endless connections between realms swirling in his mind. But he couldn’t give in. He had to resist. With a final, desperate effort, Calen focused all his willpower, forcing the Key to obey. Slowly, the dark presence receded, and the Veil between worlds began to stabilize. The Veilspawn retreated, their connection to the realm severed. The world was safe—for now. Calen stood alone in the dark, the Celestial Key glowing faintly in his hand. The threat had been averted, but the Key’s power remained, its true purpose still unclear. He knew that as long as the Key existed, the danger would never truly be over.
