EPISODE THREE: SHADOWS FROM THE PAST

912 Words
The morning sunlight streamed through the Blackwood estate’s massive windows, illuminating the sleek, modern interiors. Amara sat at the breakfast table, her fingers nervously tapping the edge of her coffee cup. One week had passed since the engagement announcement, and the reality of her new life was beginning to sink in. The cameras, the events, the constant scrutiny—it was all overwhelming. Yet the most disorienting part wasn’t the world watching—it was Ethan. He moved through the house with effortless precision, his tailored suit immaculate, his expression unreadable. Even in the quiet moments, his presence commanded attention. And though they had yet to break any of the contract’s “rules,” she could feel the invisible tension growing between them, like a thread pulled too tight. “Amara,” a voice called from the doorway. It was Lydia, Ethan’s personal assistant, impeccably dressed and always poised. “Mr. Blackwood requested you in his office. There’s an urgent meeting.” Amara took a deep breath, smoothing her dress. The thought of walking into Ethan’s office, just the two of them, made her stomach flutter. She reminded herself this was a business arrangement—nothing more. She had to keep it that way. When she entered, Ethan was already at his desk, reviewing documents. He looked up, his sharp eyes catching hers instantly. “Sit,” he said, gesturing toward the chair opposite him. “What’s so urgent?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. He leaned back, folding his hands. “Your father’s case.” Her heart skipped. “What about it?” “There’s been a development,” Ethan said. “Someone is leaking information. Possibly an insider at the firm investigating the Blackwood Group’s financial history. They’ve found evidence that could exonerate him…or make things worse.” Amara’s hands trembled. “Exonerate him? You mean he could be free?” “Yes,” Ethan said, voice neutral but eyes intense. “But the information is volatile. If it gets into the wrong hands, it could ruin both your father and the company.” The words hung in the air. She felt hope and fear mix into a knot in her chest. “Why are you telling me this?” “Because it concerns you,” he replied. “And because I’m the only person who can ensure it’s handled discreetly.” Amara nodded slowly, her mind racing. For the first time since stepping into this life, she felt a flicker of trust. But trust was dangerous—especially with him. Later that day, she was escorted to the company archives with Ethan. The building was imposing, sterile, and filled with the hum of computers and the faint scent of polished wood. As they walked, Amara tried to process everything. Ethan’s calm, controlled demeanor was unnerving. He rarely spoke, yet when he did, his words carried weight that demanded attention. They reached a secured room. Ethan swiped a card, and the door opened. Inside, rows of shelves held files dating back decades. Lydia’s voice came over a speaker. “Security will monitor the area. You have one hour.” Ethan pulled out a file and handed it to her. “This is all we have on your father’s case. Examine it carefully.” Amara’s hands shook as she opened the folder. Reports, statements, and bank records lay before her. Then she saw it—a handwritten note in her mother’s handwriting. It mentioned a meeting, a transfer, and a warning. Her mother had known something. Something about the Blackwood Group. “Amara?” Ethan’s voice startled her. “Do you understand what this means?” She looked up. “It… it proves my father’s innocence.” Her voice was barely a whisper. Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Yes. But it also proves that someone close to the Blackwood empire orchestrated your family’s downfall. Someone who wanted them silenced.” Amara’s chest tightened. Rage mingled with fear. “You mean… your family?” Ethan’s jaw tightened, but his voice remained calm. “I don’t know who yet. But it’s not me.” They worked in silence, piecing together the puzzle. Every discovery revealed more secrets: altered documents, hidden transfers, and threats to silence witnesses. Amara realized that for years, someone powerful had manipulated events, using her family as pawns in a game she hadn’t even known existed. The hour passed too quickly. Ethan closed the file, his expression unreadable. “You need to leave this in my hands for now. It’s dangerous to act too soon.” Amara nodded, though she wanted to scream, to fight, to demand answers. Yet she knew he was right. Acting recklessly could destroy everything. That evening, as they returned to the estate, a black SUV waited outside the gates. A man in a dark coat stepped out, holding a folder. His eyes flicked toward Amara, a smirk playing on his lips. “Miss Kingsley,” he said smoothly. “We’ve been expecting you.” Before she could react, Ethan stepped in front of her. “Who are you?” The man smiled wider. “Someone who knows everything. Your little contract may protect you… for now. But secrets have a way of catching up.” Amara felt a chill run down her spine. The year-long arrangement that had seemed like a lifeline was suddenly a trap surrounded by shadows from the past—and the stakes were higher than she had ever imagined.
