CHAPTER 13

LYRA Logan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his tousled brown hair. His gaze flicked toward the door for the briefest moment, as if debating whether he should even be having this conversation. But then, with a quiet sigh, he pulled out the chair at the small desk and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees. “You want the truth?” His voice was low and steady, carrying the weight of something inevitable. “Alright, Lyra. I’ll give it to you.” I sat up straighter, my heart pounding against my ribs. “I’m listening.” Logan’s eyes never left me as he spoke. “This world—it’s not like anything you’ve read about in books. Werewolves… we’re not just people who shift under the full moon. We’re a different breed. We have powers—strength, speed, senses that go beyond what you can imagine. And we’re bound by something called ‘the pack bond.’ It connects us. It makes us stronger together.” I frowned, struggling to process his words. “So, you’re saying… everyone here is a werewolf? Ronan is a werewolf?” Logan studied me for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, his gaze hardened. “Ronan isn’t just any werewolf. He’s the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack—the strongest pack in the region.” His voice dropped, becoming almost reverent. “You’ve heard of Alphas, right?” My mind reeled. “Alpha… as in, the werewolf Alpha?” The words sounded foreign on my tongue, like something out of a fairytale. “You’re serious?” Logan’s lips pressed into a thin line, his gaze unwavering. “Dead serious. Ronan is the most powerful Alpha in existence.” I felt a chill creep down my spine. “So, what does that mean? He’s just... stronger than everyone else?” Logan nodded sharply. “Stronger, yes. But it’s more than that. Ronan’s control goes beyond power. He controls the pack—the people, the land, everything. His influence stretches further than you can imagine. People don’t challenge him. Not unless they’re looking to die.” A shiver crawled down my spine. “And you?” I asked, my voice softer now, a sense of dread tightening my chest. “What’s your role in all of this?” Logan’s gaze flickered briefly before settling back on me. “I’m just his warrior,” he said, his tone surprisingly flat. I blinked. “So, you’re his loyal servant?” Logan smirked, though there was no humor in it. “Loyal, yes. Servant? No. I follow Ronan because he’s my Alpha. That’s how this world works. Packs need order. Without it, everything falls apart.” I shook my head, still processing. “And what does that make me? Why am I even here?” Logan leaned forward, his forearms resting on his knees. “That’s the real question, isn’t it?” His voice softened, but the weight of his words pressed down on me. “You’re here because of your blood. Because of who your real parents were.” I felt my breath catch in my throat. “My parents?” My voice trembled, and I clenched my fists to steady myself. “What do you know about them?” Logan hesitated, his jaw tightening as he glanced away briefly. When he spoke again, his words were measured. “They were once trusted members of Crescent Moon. But they chose a different path. They betrayed the pack. They aligned themselves with the Crimson Fang Pack.” He paused, the silence hanging heavy between us. “And that, Lyra... that’s why you’re here.” The ground beneath me felt like it was crumbling away. Betrayal. My parents had once been part of Crescent Moon, but they had turned their backs on Ronan’s pack for some twisted reason. “And now you’re caught in the aftermath,” Logan continued, his voice softening, though still carrying a weight of quiet intensity. “Ronan doesn’t forget betrayal. He doesn’t forgive it. And if you’re connected to them... you’re a reminder of everything they did. That makes you a target.” I felt the blood drain from my face as the words sank in. My parents had made a choice—a dangerous, destructive choice. And I was left to bear the consequences. “That’s why he called me a traitor,” I murmured, barely able to choke out the words. “Why everyone here seems to hate me.” Logan didn’t deny it. I swallowed, trying to calm the racing pulse in my neck. “Then why am I still alive?” I asked, the question slipping out before I could stop it. “If my parents were such a threat, why didn’t Ronan just—” I couldn’t even finish the sentence, the thought too chilling to voice. Logan’s eyes met mine, dark with something I couldn’t quite place. “That’s the part I don’t know,” he admitted, his voice low and troubled. “But Ronan let you live for a reason. And whatever that reason is, you need to be prepared for it. Ronan’s power—it goes beyond physical strength or manipulation. He doesn’t just control the pack. He controls everything around him. People bend to his will, Lyra. He could make the entire world obey him if he wanted to.” The words hit me like a punch to the gut. The idea of Ronan wielding that much power made my skin crawl. But it also terrified me. If he could control everything—everything—then what chance did I have? “And the fact that you’re here, under his roof, means you’re already bound to him in ways you can’t escape,” Logan added, his voice almost grim. I shivered, trying to process everything he’d just said. “And what if I don’t want to be part of this world?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. Logan’s expression softened just slightly, though the weight of his words remained. “It doesn’t matter what you want, Lyra. You’re already in it. And there’s no way out.” The silence stretched between us, thick with the weight of unspoken truths. My mind spun in a frenzy, trying to make sense of everything. My parents had been traitors. Ronan was a monster, capable of things I couldn’t even begin to understand. And I was tied to it all. Ronan hadn’t spared me out of kindness. No, he had kept me alive for a reason. And that reason? It terrified me more than anything else. I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling as they curled into fists. “What happens now?” I asked, barely above a whisper. Logan leaned back in his chair, exhaling sharply. “That depends on Ronan.” The thought sent a chill down my spine. Because Ronan didn’t strike me as a man who let things go.
