Mannie’s POV
“Hey babe, are you free today?” I asked the moment Kayla picked up.
Her sleepy voice came through the line, rough and tired. “No sweetheart, I got work today. You know it’s a bar, so it’ll be busy tonight. I just got home from my last shift. I need to sleep.”
“Alright. Take care, babe.” I said, about to hang up when she added softly,
“I’ll come pick up Adam and the kids later. They’ve been making some money from the singing gig at the bar.”
“Um…” I bit my lip, hesitating. My heart gave a small twist. The thought of my kids at the bar scared me even though I trusted Kayla. The bar wasn’t like the rough kind—still, I couldn’t help feeling anxious. “Alright,” I said after a moment. “Please take care of them for me.”
“Of course, mama bear. Bye!”
“Bye…” I whispered, staring
