"I found you, Jay" "I.. This can't be happening, it's impossible," I stuttered. Willed me to be the heir? You've got to be messing with me. How did I go from being a destitute student to an overnight heir in a billion-dollar company? "Your father has always been cautious, there's no way he would've left the company to be fully in any of their control." I shook my head as I smiled bitterly. " I have no interest in going against my sister or uncle to get a slice of the cake." I knew better. The heart of man could be evil, especially when such high stakes were involved. "It's your dad's will, there's no changing it. If you don't take control, they'll still be stripped of their present power, and I don't assume they'll let it slide, whether it was your intention or not." My heart went cold, " Even my sister?" Luke signed. "It's a dead end. I'll advise you, you're better off being in the company, than on your own. You'd be too vulnerable. And …." Luke hesitated, his face turned gloomy. "It's not certain that the reason behind your Dad's disappearance won't lay their eyes on you. " My face paled in fright. Luke was right, for all I knew, I could enter their sights. Men had died for less, talk more of billions in assets and cash. Luke stared at me. "Think about it. It's your father's legacy after all." I nodded,as I pondered silently. Why would he leave leeway for me to potentially inherit. I knew numbers, but I didn't know business. Could his disappearance have anything to do with anyone at the company? The more I thought, the more confused I became. Luke sighed " You need to understand, Jay, I don't want to lie to you. But taking control of the company isn't all that bad. You could finish that class you've been taking, and there's your girl too, you could take good care of her. In a nutshell, there's a lot of challenges involved, but you'll still be the heir whether or not you accept,so why not just do it?" My eyes lit up at Luke's words, he was right, it was not certain that I'd have to enter a risky situation fighting over control. Besides, my sister was there. My thoughts became clearer and clearer. I took a deep breath before I looked at Luke. "Okay, I'll do it, I'll take control of Zogenix." Luke's face split into a wide smile. The hospital was bustling as always when we arrived. I felt out of place in the clothes Luke got me. He'd insisted I shower and get changed into new clothes. When I'd seen the clothes, I'd gasped, they screamed luxury. I was dressed in a blue fur sweater over very black jeans and white Nikes. I didn't want to admit, but damn, I look hot. I just felt awkward at the stares being thrown at me. As if he'd read my mind Luke snorted besides me, he spoke in a low voice. "You'll get used to it. Soon enough, you'd see your face on TV and have people question and criticise everything you do. Are you ready?" I was stunned,I shook my head. "What does it have to do with me? People's opinions don't pay the bill" Luke was stunned, then he laughed heartily. "Well said." Luke navigated his way through the hospital, we'd come to get the chain of custody form from the manager. Luke said we needed it to give the company board to prove my legitimacy. "I'm here to see Mr. Robert" Luke said to the receptionist. "Mr. Robert's in a meeting right now,but I can take a message for him." Luke snorted, "It would be in your best interests to get Mr. Robert out here, even he won't dare keep me waiting." The receptionist surveyed us quizzically, she stared at me with a stare I knew all too well, deference. "I'll call him right away," the receptionist walked from behind the counter, she went into a private elevator. Wouldn't it be faster to just call him? I wondered speechlessly. Soon she was back, the look on her face was even more respectful. "Sorry for the misunderstanding, Mr. Luke, Please go in." Power, this was power I thought as I clenched my fists, get it and I'd never get ignored, never. "Ooh, I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding, Mr. Luke, I didn't expect you to be back so soon." A middle aged man walked up to Luke immediately we stepped out of the elevator. Robert's eyes brightened when he saw me. "You must be Jay." I nodded. Robert laughed heartily, "Your case really is a special one,it must've been tough growing without family. Well, that's been put to an end." " Where are the documents?" Luke asked impatiently. "Here…here, I'd just stamped them and faxed one to the firm." Luke's face changed. "I didn't give any orders for you to fax anything." Robert was stunned. "But..but" he stammered. "The guy who came here had the same ID with your PA who came a few days ago." "Describe the person." Luke snapped, his voice sounded angry. "Or better still bring the flagged ID copies" I said helpfully from the side. Robert nodded before he rushed into the office,he searched frantically amongst files on his desk. "Hah! Here it is" he handed it over to Luke. I peered over too, my heart skipped a beat. "I know this guy" Indeed I did, it was Heinze. Luke's face turned cold. "We've been made, I can't take any chances, we need to leave right now!" Luke pocketed the chain of custody form, we left hurriedly. "If that guy was here, your uncle definitely is now in the know of your existence," Luke said briskly as we walked quickly towards the entrance. "I can't say what actions he'd take, but we have to leave here." I nodded in agreement,I widened my strides. We'd just turned a corner when an all too familiar voice called behind me. "Jay?.. What are you doing here" I turned, staring into the eyes of Melissa. Melissa was the one person I didn't want to see, her actions had deeply hurt me, I suddenly thought, did Robert's mistaken faxing of the chain of custody form have anything to do with her? I smiled coldly "Nurse Melissa." Melissa shifted uncomfortably, "I didn't mean it Jay." I waved my hands, cutting her off. " When it really came down to it,I wasn't valuable to you enough, I was discardable, it's over Melissa." I felt pain rippling through me, I smiled even more coldly. Destiny couldn't have been predicted, now I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to make my mark. I'd make her regret it. I turned away without another word, ignoring Melissa's calls behind me.
