Chapter 5

OPHELIA’S POV: “Damn!” I screamed as I yanked the veil off my face, closing the door behind me. I hadn’t expected Julian to be here, they’re other places to be, why here? Wasn’t he busy with work? I threw myself on the bed, a heavy sigh tore from my throat when a knock came at the door. “Hey Velvet!”, Lucas, the bar owner greeted happily but my cold gaze soon froze his smile. “Did something happen?” he asked “Lucas I almost got busted today, what was I thinking?” I threw my hands up with a groan “Why?” he looked around “Did someone come in here?” he asked “No, I met…someone I knew” I pouted “Ay, come on. No one’s going to find out. You’re not Ophelia, you’re the amazing dancer Velvet, the face of this club with the mysterious veil on…” he placed my veil on my face “…no one’s going to know” he said. A smile finally curled on my lips “Where’s my pay?” I stretched my hand towards him “Ready as always” he winked. ~~ I kept yawning and tearing up at work the next day, I hadn’t seen Julian today. Come to think of it, he looked tired last night, maybe he’s sick. “Is he sick?” I panicked and took my phone immediately to make a call when I heard distant footsteps. Julian walked in and I flew to my feet “Good morning, Mr. Vane” I greeted. He paused and glanced at me like he was searching for something. My brows rose a little but then he walked away without even replying. Guess he didn’t recognize me from all that makeup and wig. Julian recognizes people easily, I would have been busted if I didn’t choose to be mysterious. Julian called me in and I flew in, almost immediately. “Have you ever heard of Velvet bar and lounge?” he asked. My breath ceased. Was I wrong? Did he find me out? “No sir, is there a problem” I looked at him curiously “So you never heard about the mysterious dancer, Velvet?” he asked “Not at all. Is she someone you know?” “No, never mind. You may leave”. I turned around but didn’t walk away immediately. I turned back at Julian. I wanted to stay longer with him, I needed an excuse “Do you need me to do anything?” I looked over his table “No” Then, I remembered “Aren’t you getting any gift today?” I asked “It’s your anniversary” those words managed to leave my throat. Julian paused his typing and looked up to me “You’re coming with me then” he got up and walked towards the door I just needed something to make us spend at least a part of the day together. Anything. “Your jacket” I held it up “Hold it with you”. I followed him immediately. This time, he drove while I sat in the front seat. I kept my gaze outside the whole time trying to hide my burning face. It was the first time Julian drove and I sat there like a princess. For a short moment, I felt like we were something other than a boss and employee. We arrived at the usual jewelry shop and went in first, though I held the doors myself. He just followed behind while I picked out somethings I liked other than what his fiancé would like. “Could you pack this up, please?” “Sure” the lady replied then I turned to Julian who had his eyes somewhere else “Sir?” I held my palm out. He looked at my palm for a second before realizing. Still attractive as ever. He handed me his card but when I saw the price on it, my jaw dropped “What?” he asked. I shook my head and paid anyways. While people like me worked like dogs to earn money, people like Julian spent them like it was nothing. We left the store and got back to the company but the moment I got out of the car I saw Ashley waiting patiently. When she sighted me coming out of Julian’s car, her expression darkened. Not again. Julian got out and walked towards her “Hey princess” he pressed a kiss on her lips. Sadly, I watched It happen “Where did you go?” she asked, looking at the bag in my hand “Oh you caught me” he waved me over and took the bag from me “For you. I didn’t forget this time” he said, his hands placed on her waist, possessively Of course, because I reminded you. Why’d I even do that? I walked towards the company doors when Ashley called my name “Yes” I forced a smile “Trash this” she said, handing the wrapper to me. I glanced briefly at the bin behind them. Julian looked at me, as always, expecting me to do whatever she wanted. I don’t even get paid enough! “Sure” I took the wrapper and tossed it into the bin as they walked in. An internal commotion went on within me but all I could do was clench my fists till my knuckles turned white. While they were in Julian’s office doing whatever, I sat by the desk, tapping my foot anxiously. Then I got up and paced here and there. I needed something to distract me. Julian called me in and for the first time, I didn’t want to go in. The intercom came in again but this time it was Ashley. I glared at the intercom “I heard you b***h!” I mouthed I went in about a minute later and saw Ashley sitting comfortably on Julian’s legs, her hands trailing up his shirt “You called me?” I tried to remain neutral “I need some water” she said. She really called me in for water. She f*****g called me in for water! I wasn’t going to lose my mind so I just nodded and left to get some water. I hope she chokes on it. I handed the water to her as I glanced briefly at Julian who had that look on her. He obviously loves her and I wouldn’t stand a chance plus, they’ll be getting married soon, won’t they? Water splashed against my face, the glass falling to the floor “Oh gosh! What is wrong with you?” Ashley said, clearly irritated by her actions and still somehow had to put the blame on her. I stared into space feeling the water trail down my shirt. Julian simply pushed his seat backwards, helping Ashley with the little drop of water on her legs “Will you be more careful?” he frowned at me. At me? Your fiancé literally spilled water and you’re frowning at me? are you blind? I said nothing and just bent over to pick the broken glass and wiped the water on the floor. “Making a mess like a child” I muttered before walking out the door “What did she say to me?” she yelled behind the close doors. About an hour later, Ashley came out with Julian laughing. I didn’t look at them and just continued reviewing documents I had reviewed a million times. She kissed Julian in front of me, my finger pressed on a key longer than it should have at the sound of the kiss. She left but Julian was still there, he knocked at my desk and I stood up “Yes, Mr. Vane. Do you need something?” I asked “Ophelia, I don’t want you disrespecting Ashley anymore” “Disres…” my voice dropped low “Fix your face before talking to her.” He dumped those words like they were nothing and walked into his office. I let out a loud scoff that my ass wouldn’t dare do if he was here “Fix my face? Fix your life first, worthless gigolo” I slammed my laptop shut and walked away to breathe in fresh air away from the one the foolish couple had contaminated. Despite all these, my heart still found a way to beat for Julian.
